I have Safari 11.1.2 with OS 10.13.6.

When I upgraded from (I think) Lion, I had great trouble retrieving bookmarks and saved passwords.

Will I have the same trouble upgrading to to Safari 12, or will bookmarks and passwords still be there?

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe the Safari passwords are saved in the Keychain (others please correct me if I'm wrong). I use LastPass, so I don't save passwords in any of my browsers. Now as far as your bookmarks go, if you've had issues in the past, you should go through these instructions to create a backup of them so that you can restore them should the upgrade somehow mess things up.

I don't think Safari passwords are in keychain. I think Safari keeps them in a separate file from keychain.

Great find, Bob; but my word, it's a long and complicated process!

Another argument for not getting way, way behind on operating system upgrades.

Huge jump Lion to High Sierra.

That was my belief and understanding as well Ashwin, and all mine seem to be there. At least in using Mavericks 10.9.5 they are.

And Safari has an option to export/import bookmarks, certainly not perfect or ideal, and Keychain Access Help provides a way to export/import data:

Export keychain items
You can export keychain items and share them with another Mac.
Open Keychain Access
. Select the items you want to export in the Keychain Access window.
. Choose File > Export Items.
If the Export Items menu is dimmed, then at least one of the items selected cannot be exported.
. Select a location to save your keychain items, then choose a file type from the File Format pop-up menu.
If you want to export a certificate with its private key, choose Personal Information Exchange (p12) as the file format.
. Click Save.
. Enter a password.
The password is required to access the exported keychain items from another system.

They might be useful to have in the future.

When I have let OSX and now Mac OS upgrade Safari, I have never once lost a password or bookmarked site.

They are stored in the Keychain Jake. I just checked to make sure, and they are indeed there.

Learn something new every day. Never noticed they were there.

I just checked on the passwords for Safari. They are both in the Keychain but can also be seen in Safari/Preferences/Passwords.

Of course the passwords themselves are stored in the Keychain. I do find it nice though you can access them from Safari though.
