That depends on your interests. I have a British newspaper, The Guardian, as my home page as the first thing I want to know when I wake up is what os going on the world.

I like a blank page, but as Sue said, this is entirely personal and there is NO best.

As mentioned, using google as a browser and MSN as home page. I also use ghostery & adblock plus. Lately all web pages all of a sudden have taken much longer to load. I know get the following message on the MSN home page "Our website is having trouble interacting with your ad blocking software. If you’re experiencing issues we apologize and suggest that you try disabling your current ad blocker or switching to a different ad block provider. Thank you."
Never had this issue before and pages would load instantly.
Is there anything going on all of a sudden to cause this. Should I look into a new home page or disable the blockers.

You can add webpages that YOU trust, into ABP & Ghostery as trusted sites, or their whitelist. Then those sites will always load the way they are, I've done that with a few websites I frequent, mostly bill paying or financial ones.

In the early days of the Web there were sites that you could set as your home page that would allow you to customize them to suit your interests. (Sometimes these are called "aggregator" Web sites.) So, logging in to the Web would bring you the news, sports, weather, links, your favorite search engine, etc. customized just for you.

Most of those pages are gone...but here's one that is still with us, and it's FREE:

ProtoPage (free)
https://www.protopage.com/

Sign up, customize the page as you see fit, and set it as your home page.

You might also want to check out this free Web browser that offers both the best security and performance built-in:

Brave browser (free)
https://www.brave.com/
(Apple provides it’s own Web browser with the Mac OS; Safari. Why would you want a different Web browser? Because Brave is FAST, it blocks ads without the need for extensions, it blocks trackers, and it has excellent compatibility with various Web sites. Brave simply provides a much nicer browsing experience than other browsers.

@Randy:

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but the latest Brave browser will not import bookmarks from Safari. It says it has imported them, but it doesn't. I've tried several times to get it to work right but no luck. Maybe it's me, but it appears that Brave is not quite ready for prime time. Setup instructions likewise are a bit confusing. Otherwise it looks pretty good.

They imported with no problem whatsoever for me. They appear as a choice in the Favorites bar, rather than in a menu.

What part(s) of Brave are you finding it hard to setup?

Hundreds of folks in my user group are using Brave and not a one of them has uttered a complaint. (Actually, it pretty rare that that happens with anything.) They all love Brave to pieces. However, one member has noted that after a recent update, SlimJet took a huge leap in its development, and it has pulled about even with Brave:

I'll play around with it a bit more to see what I may have missed and will also give slimjet a try.

I tried Brave, gave up on it. I tried importing bookmarks from Safari, got nothing in, none. zilch. NO error message, just no import at all. Tried it multiple times over multiple days.

Maybe when it's a real product I'll try again. Not ready for prime time.

Exactly what I replied to Randy above in post #8. I'm glad you confirmed what I experienced. I never could get my bookmarks to import from Safari and overall its interface and setup is a bit confusing in my opinion. I also tried the Slimjet browser and got the same results as Brave. Gave up on that also.

Here is a screenshot from my copy of Brave. The two entries in the bookmark bar "Imported" and "Bookmarks" are imported bookmarks...one from Safari and one from Firefox. It was dead easy to import them. Easy peezy. Literally hundreds of folks in my user group are using Brave and so far everyone has loved it. It's FAST and it is secure, right out of the box. There's nothing hard about setting it up whatsoever, you just have to put forth a tiny bit of effort. If you have any problems doing so, just post here about it and I'd be happy to assist you.

For the fun of it I just installed Brave on the 2010 Quad core iMac i7 with High Sierra. It gave me the option to import, since most of my bookmarks are in Safari, I choose that. All are there under bookmarks and in the bookmarks bar just like in Safari.

I don't know what is up with it not working for some. Strange for sure. Are you importing from Safari?

Shield works perfectly for me in Mojave. Loaded selected bookmarks and history no problems. Running Dark Theme. I'm thinking it would be nice to see how it performs with just built in protection and individual site settings. Seems fast so far.

It's a pity I can't run Brave on my old iPad mini iOS 9.3.5, would have been perfect. I have loaded it on my MBP though. I'll report back on that. Seems to me I tried it a while back and didn't like it much. Maybe it's improved.

I have the same problem with Brave, that I have with Chrome... some intentional "pop-up windows" are too large, and I've yet to figure out how to resize them. (pic 1)

While Firefox, and Vivaldi (Which IS Chrome based) are fine (pic 2)

Dennis:

Both Jake and myself are trying to set Brave up in Mojave and importing Safari bookmarks from Safari running in Mojave. Randy didn't say which version of macOS he was running when importing bookmarks from Safari and Firefox. I noticed that you were running High Sierra at the time. I'm wondering if the problem is that Brave is not ready for Mojave?

Anyway, I'm not sure I like it even if it works. Safari is working for me and so is Chrome.

Here is what I get with Mojave 10.14.3 (just updated today) and Safari 12.0.3

2019-01-22 03.20.11 pm.png

Nothing at all on the bookmarks bar. That is after five tries.

As I said, when it's ready, I may try again but for now, not ready for prime time.

Could be the issue is Mojave and Safari is different enough than it is in High Sierra. Thanks for filling me in. I will test it in a few and report back.

I love Safari overall and keep FF and Chrome just in case.
