• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

It's not that difficult really.

You'll need something like this to transfer the VHS to your Mac:
https://www.elgato.com/en/video-capture

If you need to edit, then you can use Quicktime or iMovie.

To make a playable DVD from the resultant video file, if you don't have iDVD then you can use the free Burn.

iDVD was a program Apple sold as part of the iLife suite of software. With it a user couuld take video clips and burn to a DVD while creating a menu with some high quality graphics. The process could take quite some time butt the results were really quite good.

I think I read somewhere that the program still works if you have it but it won't work under whatever version of the OS follows Mojave.

I've had Burn on my computer for quite some time and never had any issues with it engaging in "unsafe" behavior.

And, you would be correct. iDVD still works but will die with the next version of macOS. iDVD, iWeb, QuickTime 7, and other older Apple 32 bit programs are likewise going to die off. By the way, the current version of the Amazon Kindle program for the Mac is also 32 bit and it appears that it hasn't been updated for several years.

I didn't realize that about the Kindle app. I put it on my Mac for some reason but haven't used it in a long time. I think I was helping her test soemthing with a few of her Kiindle files.

I hope Amazon updates their Kindle program because it's not just the program that will die off but also the complete library of books that I have for it. If there was an easy way to convert Kindle to iBooks I would do it. The Kindle books are all protected and can't be copied or even backed up. I stopped buying Kindle versions some time ago because I'm afraid that Amazon is just going to let their Kindle stuff die.

I agree. My wife never had a lot of stuf in Kindle format and once she decided that her Kindle gizmo was far more limited than an iPad we have pretty much avoided anything in Kindle format.

I know there are tools out there that supposedly convert from Kindle to other formmats but haven't bothered to look into it.
