I have an older iMac running El Capitan version 10.11.6, my iMac has 4 gig of ram and is a dual core 2.4 mhz.

Is it possible or worthwhile installing Mojave on this system?:

Mojave requires a late 2012 iMac or newer. I don't think the dual core iMac is that new but you can find out by going to the Apple menu and choosing About This Mac. the first screen that appears will tell you what year the Mac was produced. There apparently is a method to run Mojave on unsupported Macs but I have not tested it yet,

Assuming that you were able to get Mojave running at all I doubt you would be pleased with its performance. 4 GB of ram really isn't enough to run it effectuvely.

You could always explore the option of running a new(er) macOS version like Sierra or High Sierra?

And a much more sensible suggestion I'd say, even coming if I'm in a bit late here, and that seems to be a iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 20-Inch (Early 2008) model and it's limited to: Maximum MacOS: X 10.11.x*

Thank you Patrick, some very useful information, I will upgrade the RAM in this iMac to 6 gig which seems to be the maximum allowed, and stick with El Capitan!
