Apple TV compatibilty

I'm sorry, I don't know if this is the right category, but i wanna know if Apple TV can play .avi files, in that case, Is it able to play .avi files with codecs such us DivX or Xvid?

As far as I know AppleTV can only play Mac formats (mp4). This is one of the limitations of the device.

I was investigating and found out that I can play avi files by two different ways, hacking my Apple TV with Boxee or installing different plug-in's could please explain to me that two ways?
