I've just seen an advert for MacKeeper. Has anyone any experience of this?

To add just one thing: There was a class action brought against MacKeeper, it was so damaging to computers and so very difficult to remove. They paid out a lot, I understand.

So what Sawday said is spot on.

A good practice, i.e. ask before you leap! :) Many posters w/ these 'Mac Cleaner' questions come AFTER an installation moaning and groaning and the cure can be painful! - Dave

@ David
It was a good thing for you to ask about MacKeeper, but I guess I'm a bit curious and wondering why considering it seems that you have been a Member Since Nov 19, 2014.

But I guess it's easy to skip any messages about a topic that doesn't concern one at the time or maybe you don't visit the forums just to browse. :Smirk:

Anyway, I'm glad you asked and you should be thankful you did as well. :app

I came across an ad for MacKeeper when I was Googling something else. Nowadays I always like to check here before I commit to anything new.

Many thanks to you all.

There is a good chance you might come across a MacKeeper ad on almost any site and even if you used a good ad blocker.

It's ruthless and I really wonder what their advertising budget is or how they manage to get it to so many places. No doubt they probably used some snake oil sales tactics and various con jobs.

They are also quite ruthless once they have you hooked, and deleting their software completely can be quite a hassle.

You should know that since the lawsuit there are several other suspiciously similar sounding products that are also being advertised around the Web. It seems likely that they are just MacKeeper re-branded to avoid the stigma created by the lawsuit. Be careful!

If you search for 'MacKeeper' on this site you will find hundreds of posts.

This site could use a FAQ (frequently asked questions) section. Some questions come up constantly. e.g.:

- Do I need Anti-Virus software?

- Is MacKeeper a good idea?

- Can I upgrade the processor/video card on my Mac?

- Can I run a version of the Mac OS older than the one it came with?

- How much faster will my Mac be with more RAM?

- How much faster will my Mac be with an SSD?

- Why has my Mac slowed way down recently?

- What's better, a color inkjet printer or a color laser printer?

etc.

@Randy Interesting idea. I don't know why that never occurred to me before now. Time to go into the thinking corner and puzzle over things for a bit.

Yeah, definitely the case. You were very wise to ask first. Funny, I have not seen MacKeeper ads for quite a while. Are they making a come back?

Funny that you would mention that and I was thinking the same thing just the other day, then lo and behold, up popped several ads for MacKeeper and that was when browsing with my AdBloker enabled.

So they are still alive and well and no doubt sucking in all kinds of money from all the unsuspecting users.

I've been trying to find out how many hats I need to trade in to get one of those shiny new Mac Pro models (with/without the snazzy monitor). For some strange reason, the rest of the team has been strangely silent on this issue. Could that mean they are planning a birthday surprise?

They are probably trying to figure out what the price difference would be and I was looking at the new Mac Pro webpage at Apple's site today and all it says is "Mac Pro Coming This Fall". So just be a bit more patient I guess.

Ditto 10 out of 10 for asking. I agree with the above comments 100%. As a forum we have spent hundreds of hours trying to help people remove MacKeeper and the problems it has caused.

This is what I rather gratifying find if I do a search for "What is MacKeeper?"
