Good day. my Disk Utility states I have 17 GB available. When I make a new folder on my desktop it says I over 72GB. What am I missing? Thanks everyone.

Good day. I cannot seem to turn this off. When I go into the Security and Privacy setting the tab is greyed out. Any ideas? Thank you.

Did you click the small lock at the bottom of the dialog and then enter your Admin password?

Yes I have done that and the tab is greyed out.

That should have given you the option to turn it off and begin decrypting the drive. Try booting to safe mode and see if you can turn it off from there.

If that doesn't work, boot to Recovery and run First Aid on your drive. Then try again from a normal boot.

That could be the reason you can't turn off FileVault. I wish you had given us this info along with the other thread you started. Decrypting the drive requires a certain amount of space to be available, as such, the process would not be able to run to remove the encryption.

What are the specs of the Mac you are referring to?

Model/year?
drive space free/used?
OS version?

How much free space have you on your Mac? This is crucial because in order to turn off FileVault, you will need a significant amount of unused/free space on your Mac's Internal Hard Drive.

I have 16.4 GB free with 71.53 purgeable and 481.62 used.

The drive is too full. SSDs and platters require 15% free space to operate anywhere near successfully.

Note that the OP also created another thread regarding disk space and was reminded that the lack of disk space was likely the reason he could not turn off FileVault.

Unless things have changed, I would have thought the OP would have received a message "There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on (or off) FileVault." when turning off FileVault.

And assuming they entered their password after clicking the padlock.

Some interesting bits here:

There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on FileVault.
Turning on FileVault requires an additional 132.2 GB of free space on the volume "Macintosh HD". Try emptying the Trash or deleting files you don't need.

Maybe it needs that much space to turn it off as well.
