1. I made the mistake of using AOL for email for years... YIKES! Does anyone know how to strip out the requirement to use a password on AOL??? Every few days AOL rejects my password & I have to create a new password... then after a few startups it rejects that password & I have to go through creating a new password... over & over again!
Is there a way to eliminate the need for a password without changing my AOL mail address & account? When I installed OS 10.14 I thought I got away from the password screen for a few weeks... but it returned with 10.14.2. HELP! I hate to have to change all my email addresses! I don't think I really need protection for my emails.... just my bank account! LOL!

2. With the 10.14.2 update my after market disk drive no longer will display an (EMPTY) DVD disk on the desktop... while it still recognizes a DVD disk with data on it???? Have I got some setting wrong for the DVD to be displayed on the Desktop so I can write data to it! Am I just misunderstanding a change in OS 10.14.2????

I've been using Macs since the very 1st Mac made & I taught hundreds of my students how to use Macs... NOW the constant changes for little benefit or no benefit are driving me nuts! Ease of use & obvious methods of use were what used to make Macs great! Now it seems to me Apple is into change just for changes' sake... or is it just me? Half the time I use my old iMac running on 10.6.8 to avoid irritating myself! LOL!

Than in advance for any HELP!

Hi Mr D.

A great number of people would tend to agree with many of your sentiments.

I may/may not be able to assist you with one of your hassles, namely, the DVD issue - or at least how I perceive your question.

I am assuming that you have an external DVD player/recorder? When you mount this, it will not show on the Desktop nor, I believe, in Finder, until you insert a playable CD/DVD.

If the DVD player is "empty", meaning nothing in it, it will not register as present at all. This is not new. I can recall this being the case for several previous Operating Systems.

Similarly, if you insert a blank ( ie new, unused) CD/DVD, the same is the case.

As regards AOL, I have been spared that experience and am unable to help beyond the obvious - contact AOL and see if they can sort things for you.

Ian,

Thanx for the get back!

I'm confused! I guess I haven't burned a DVD for a couple of OS changes. If the DVD does not appear on the desktop... what is the current method to burn data on to it? In previous OS's, I could simply drag the icon, or icons of what I wanted to burn onto the DVD & then burn it. I guess that was too easy for Apple! What is the current way of burning data onto a blank DVD? I assume I must have to create a folder, or something like that & then choose a burning order from a drop down menu to burn the DVD/CD. Am I getting close??? LOL! These are the changes that seem to achieve nothing but greater complication & confusion to old guys like me!

As for AOL, I guess I'll have to pay their service to see if there is a way to get away from their "pain in the ... " security system... or if I have to change my email address.

Do you know if there is still a browser that does not require a security password to get to your email or to access the internet. I killed the system until I did the 10.14.2 upgrade... & it somehow came back! It's a conspiracy! Maybe Trump is behind it! LOL!

Thanx for your help,

Hi Mr D

This may help?

To get your CD/DVD player to show on the Desktop, do this:

Open Finder, Click on the Finder icon and from there choose Preferences - you are now in Finder Preferences.

As in the screenshot below, Click on "General" and check the box marked CDs, DCDs and iPods - the red arrows indicate what I mean.

Whilst still in Finder Preferences, now Click on Sidebar and, near the bottom of the list, Check the box "CDs, DVDs and iPods" as in the screenshot below - again the red arrows guide you.

From now on, your CD/DVD player will appear on the Desktop AND in Finders' Sidebar.

Add this info to my previous post and all should be well.

Hi Mr D

Do you know if there is still a browser that does not require a security password to get to your email or to access the internet. I killed the system until I did the 10.14.2 upgrade
.

There are basically two ways of accessing your email account:

1. You use Apple Mail app and have all emails automatically downloaded to your Mac - requires that you set up the account on your Mac, but as it is AOL, that should be close to an automatic process - we can tell you what to do if necessary.

2. You can use more or less any browser to access your email account at AOL's website, but this will require you to sign in with email address and Password. It is NOT your browser that is asking for the Password, it's AOL and it would apply no matter which browser you used.

It's a conspiracy! Maybe Trump is behind it! LOL!

Trump? I've heard that name somewhere. Just can't figure out where. Was it in a Marvel comic?

Mr D, look in your browsers preferences/settings, and confirm the login name and password are correct. I had an issue where the login name and password for one site wasn't saving correctly.

Thanx for the effort... but I already had it set that way. ??? For some reason my Mac won't show an "empty" disk on the desktop. It changed in the last 2 upgrades like 10.14.2! It makes me afraid of upgrades... when I'm happy without them!

My Apple External Disk Drive died & I'm using an after market disc drive. It works fine on my old iMac... but not on my newer MacBook Pro now. It worked fine until a short time ago.

Any ideas welcome!

Hi Mr D

I know I keep saying this, but it's true.

I have, for many years, used a third party CD/DVD player AND Apple's Super Drive and neither have ever shown up on the Desktop until a Disk was inserted - if a Blank disk, I get this notice:

Screen Shot 2018-12-12 at 1.34.14 pm?.png

If a Music or Film or any other material is on the Disk - then, and then only does it show on the Desktop. And this has been the case for years. It is NOT new.

And all of the above requires that you have checked the CD/DVD box in Finder > Preferences > General - as in my post #4 above.
