Hello. I am glad this forum has been revived. It was the best I knew. I have not approached it for over 8 months now.

Quite a while ago, using Safari on the mac for browsing, I was advised here on this forum that Adblock Plus (Ads) and Ghostery (trackers) were great and that installing the two of them, and no more than the two of them, was a great idea. So I installed them and do not recall installing anything else for Safari.

This morning, opening Safari, I was advised by Safari that my versions of Adblock Plus and Ghostery were disabled by Safari. I was then directed to the add-on website to pick current versions. There I got lost among the huge choice and the apparent non-existence of Adblock Plus and Ghostery.

Should I un-install Adblock Plus and Ghostery ?

What should I use now in stead of Adblock Plus and Ghostery ?

Maybe this same question was asked zillions of times, in which cas I apologise for adding to the waste of energy, but I did not find it. TIA

Safari was updated yesterday, and those extensions will need to be updated to work with Safari again. You don’t have to uninstall them, but you can if you want.

I received the same notifications, but haven’t uninstalled them yet. I usually give a couple of weeks for them to be updated, then go from there.

I noticed this as well, and after re-enabling Ad Block Plus was getting adverts despite it being enabled.

So, I uninstalled Ad Block Plus, then downloaded and enabled the Ad Block app from the App Store.

Although it's an app, it seemingly behaves like an extension. And I'm not seeing any adverts at the mo.

Well, I just edited my previous post above, but the edit never showed.

I just uninstalled my three extensions; DuckDuckGo, Ghostery, and AdGuard AdBlock.

It seems like only App Store Extensions are acceptable now.

You may want to go through Safari Preferences and look at the Websites Tab. They have Content blocking and Popup Window controls now. Should be able to do all you need from there.

I recommend removing all previous Safari extensions as they either will not work or throw up an error if you continue using them. I just installed the free "Ka Block" from the Mac App Store and it works great. Try using that instead.

As Bob stated, all other extensions will have to be updated and approved by Apple before they work. Either that, or switch to using Chrome or Firefox where extensions still work okay.

Yeah, I installed Ka-Block! too. I just can't find any preferences for it.

There aren't any. It's either on or off. That's okay with me as long as it works like it's suppose to. We should start seeing updates to the other extensions soon enough. I'm betting Safari 12 has caught quite a few extension developers by surprise.

The "problem" with Ka-Block is that, for the moment, you cannot whitelist a particular website like ours for example.

There was a thread from this morning from a member asking how to whilst sites in Safari 12: http://www.mac-forums.com/internet-...telisting-websites-accept-cookies-safari.html

Apple has tried to minimise Tracking and "inappropriate" Ads, but limiting third party Extensions/apps to those purchased through the App Store, whilst sensible in many ways, is thwarted by the paucity of Extensions/apps available.

I mentioned this to Ron in another thread but it's worthwhile mentioning it again:

Ad Block Plus has been updated and can be downloaded for free from the Mac App Store. It has several settings that you can select. Seems to work well blocking the various ads. Also it should be noted that Safari 12 Preferences, "Websites" has many new options to look over. One of those options is "content blockers". Be sure to select the correct setting from there.
