"your system has been infected with 3 viruses"
I have been getting this popup every few days for about 3 weeks. I realize it is not a virus and I have been tolerating it and just closing out the window (ie not following it's instructions). How can I locate the culprit and get rid of it.

Malwarebytes does not detect any issues.

Always best to indicate what you've tried so that we can tell you what other things to try.

Does it only happen when you open a browser, if so which browser, or all browsers? Or, does it happen at specific or random times?

I use Safari exclusively and it happens randomly, sometimes not for 3 or 4 days.

Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

Make sure you have Quit out of Safari (command + Q). Then press and hold Shift and click to open Safari, then you can release Shift. See if that helps.

    Virus me too!
[SIZE=3]My new used imac got that pop up screen and locked and I was given a chance at support. My old mac was running side by side as I was switching over passwords etc. He (the eastern speaking support fellow) detected the firewalls had been breached or at least were both open and both computers had been infected. He then offered to fix for $499 for 1 year or $999 one time transferrable. I said no we hung up. I went into preferences and turned firewalls back on both computers and has been fine since. Was mine a hoax scam or will I have future trouble. I have received two telephone calls stating not to use my computer as it is infected.

I have received two telephone calls stating not to use my computer as it is infected.

1st thing, add the calling number(s) to your telephone "Block Caller" list.

2nd thing, download and run Malwarebytes:
    https://www.malwarebytes.com/mac/

    You'll be fine.

If they keep calling, keep a compressed-air aerosol airhorn close by and give them a good blast if they keep calling.

Also add an adblocker to your browser to stop ads from being able to popup those kinds of notices. AdBlock+ and Ghostery are two, I think uBlock is a third. Whichever you use, set it to block everything and those bogus ads should stop. Malwarebytes will eliminate any resident stuff, the blockers will (should) keep new stuff from arriving.
