I had downloaded an app from the developer site this am and just noticed now that a pop up for Mac-keep popped up saying my system needed scanning.
I quickly stopped it...I think
then googled and read that it is a virus.
so I dragged it from app folder
and deleted the folder on MPB with mac keeper backups.

am I safe..or should I be doing something else.

I wonder how on earth this go installed on my laptop....when I was making sure to be on a developers site.

tho I did use an on-line file merger and that could be it also.

any comments?

What app did you download? MacKeeper use ads either within apps or on websites to scare you into buying their software. In a lot of cases, the app developers can't really be blamed for what ads are served since you usually don't have that much control over the ad network. So if you are using an app that is maintained by ad-generated revenues, it's totally random what ad you might get served.

I guess my question is...is Mac keeper a virus or not and do I need to be concerned.

I do not buy anything apps on line unless I am sure I know where it originated.

I download free-audio-editor but when it installed it turned out to be audacity which I already have.
the online site I used was: merge mp3 which worked great...in my opinion,

It's not a virus. It won't do any harm if you don't run the application. Delete it, then see if you still get pop-ups. That's "adware" and can be addressed.

Mac Keeper, in itself, isn't a virus but is also not a very useful software. They claim to do things to keep you Mac clean and work faster, but in reality do nothing of value or do harm by "faking" it. You should definitely avoid it.

MacKeeper is malicious and there has been a class law suit against the company for the harm done by those who used it - nearly always by accident.

To give you a flavour of the difficulties in removing this potentially damaging software, have a read at these:

well goodmorning
now I really have done it. I was unable to get onto any sites on MBP this am tho could do so on iPad and iPhone. so am guessing it could be this Mac-keeper issue.
ian thanks for the links. had to login on my iPad as MBP was not connecting. I checked them all links and only the first one seemingly deals with getting rid of this Mac-keeper as others show how to uninstall it...but I had already trashed it right away.
should have used app cleaner...too late now.

harry...I do not download from cnet, softonic nor macupdate and try to really make sure I am downloading from developer site.

I had few issues early April where I could not get any internet...ended up rebooting modem and that solved the issue. I then made a backup...wasnt I smart? lol lol lol

so today after removing all my history from all browsers, restarting MBP and all other normal checks....I decided to see if rebooting modem would work before I delved into the tech instructions from first link Ian provided.
that seemed to work just fine...I now have wifi connection to all my devices.

tho I wonder if I should not still try to rid my MPB of any Mac-keeper lingering files.

JFYI: I ended up getting hit with mackeeper a year or so ago when visiting the open source developers site. I was really surprised and that is a big understatement.

The uninstall instructions are easily found, and I also used my friend Find Any File.app (FAF):
http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php

Basically using FAF, a search and destroy on any file/folder with the name containing: MacKeeper, Zeobit and/or Kromtech, the latest owner I believe.

thanks for info on FAF...tho I just entered Mac-keeper in search bar after I had dragged app to trash (instead of using uninstall or AppCleaner) and one file popped up so I deleted it.
would not just using the search bar be good enough?
I don't get into these messes very often and don't think I need to purchase FAF right now anyway.

I'm not understanding clearly exactly what you mean. Sorry.

PS: Don't forget to try using FAF to search on the other name I suggested that could be associated with mackeeper.

It's basically like shareware and will just send a reminder once in a while so you can keep it and use when needed. If you use it a fair bit, then do the right thing.

And my 2 bits worth says you'll use it. :Smirk:

It's probably enough. That doesn't mean you'll be able to find every file associated with the app. Spotlight (search bar) is notoriously lacking. But, getting rid of the app from the Applications folder is the essential thing to do.

There's also the "Easyfind.app" which is free and also a 64 bit app. I actually like the Easyfind.app better than Find Any File. Lori can try that app and continue to use it without worrying about shareware.

If I may: +1 for EasyFind. Vastly better than Spotlight. I do concede that there is a place for Find Any File, but it's for more specialised use.

Hmmm…??? That's odd Ian, as I would have thought that it was the other way around.

But, definitely room and a need for both I'd say. But I prefer FAF as it's so much faster now for finding file/folder names IMHO.

It's good to know, and let me make this clear, I'm not suggesting this pathway as a solution for lori but one of the things that MacKeeper did do well was uninstall itself. The MacKeeper folder included an Uninstaller which was quite effective at removing both the app and it's associated files. In one instance on another forum it was suggested to an OP that they should reinstall the app then use the Uninstaller to remove it because it was more effective than trying to manually find all of the elements of the app. That OP reported this was successful.
So if the app is unintentionally installed first step is to look for the Uninstaller rather than just trashing the bits you can see. MacKeeper is an insideous and invasive app which installs files all over the place.

Lori, bear in mind that if you have no problems you can disregard some of the solutions and suggestions but if you do it might be worth copying some of our replies for future reference.
This site was supposed to have been shut down in December 2017 according to the site owners but for some reason it is still alive. We have no idea for how long so all of these threads may disappear at any time. You could just copy and paste them into a Word doc. for future reference.

Thnx... I think I just panicked and quickly deleted mac-keeper.
Yes I heard this site was closing and I certainly hope the posts and reply’s can be synced with new site. Way too many replies to copy/paste for safety.
The only thing is I have no ideas what files still linger on my laptop from Mac-keeper. Will have to watch for any reoccurances.

It will not be possible to migrate the data base to the new site. So what we have posted will be lost. Sad but true.
