I'm going to start studying in a new school in September and the school requires students to wear a suit with polished shoes. What does 'polished' actually mean? Does it mean glossy? I've asked everyone I know and no one seemed to know for sure. Hope that someone here can answer my question.

Polished shoes refers to clean, fairly new, black shoes which may need shoe polish once in a while to keep looking new.
It does not mean that you have to wear shiny ballroom dancing shoes. :D

I googled polished shoes and education and it came back that there is no direct correlation between the capacity of learning and the gloss of ones shoes. LOL Good luck at your new school and keep us posted on what you learning there! They always make me put my shoes on before i go into the public library here and I live in Kentucky. The audacity!! And incidentally my shoes are Danish, do your shoes really have to be Polish to go to your new school. Can that be considered discrimination? I think you've gotta case if you want to pursue it. Good luck with the litigation.

thanks very much, I guess it would be weird for a school to require students to wear shiny shoes.

You should ask what were to happen if one's polished shoes happen to become unpolished over the coarse of the day.

Just make sure there aren't any scuffs/scratches. Seems like a standard rule for schools that require uniforms. Uniforms, such an outdated concept. I guess it keeps people in line, makes them learn "their place" and makes the transition to the military easier.

They are setting the standards so that when you get relax after a while, your shoes don't go to pot.

My guess is it's old verbage that should probably be changed from "polished shoes" to "dress shoes."

In dress uniformed polished is very much interpreted as blindingly shiny. :)

These are my work boots, they have to be "polished". Takes a few hours to get em like this. But once they are done they are quick to touch up.

Just in case, take a small bottle of armour all, silicone spray, or tyre shine with you :)

Polished shoes are dumb for the military. If you get attacked and need to hide to spring an ambush, your shiny shoes are more likely to give you away than non shiny.

polished shoes are for garrison only meaning around the post non training. you don't go to the field wearing dress greens and spit shine boots.

As per my knowledge polishing a shoes is nothing but cleaning the shoes without dust and making it shine...

That's a chlorofram/patent leather shoe. Once you scuff those, you are screwed.
I use furniture polish to clean my chlorofram shoes and military dress boots.

I'm guessing if you simply call the institution, they would be happy to tell you their expectations on "shiny shoes". I wear black polished Doc Martens 1925's for work and go over them once a week with black polish and a wax finish "Wonder Balsam". Makes them stompers shine!
