Well, now we are a little more settled I have been able to get back to my lathe again. Not too cold after a few minutes of the fan heater doing its knut!

We are selling (I hope) at a craft fair at the end of Jan and I wanted be make something with Valentines in mind, for the lady who thinks she has everything. Well, she ain't got one of these, know what I mean?

It called inside out turning ( look it up for a better description than I could give ). A single stem flower vase done in oak and black walnut with a 1" glass vile in it.

It's a fascinating way of turning and although I haven't done very much I love doing it. Like everything else in turning you never really know what you have got untill you stop the lathe.

You do have to a bit careful with wood though because unlike money it doesn't grow on trees you know : :

Wow. :app

I could never build something like that no matter what those tool commercials tell me at 2:00 a.m. on the TV. All the tools in the world can't make up for skill/talent. Of course I'll keep telling myself I could build such things if SWMBO let me use sharp objects.;D

Hi John - very nice, indeed - congrats! My shop is about the same (downsizing somewhat - still have not gotten in lathe work) - but I have built a few items since your move back. Dave :)

A load of them get butchered instead of burnt, but it keeps me off the streets dunit? :a:a

Edit : - I just picked up your post Dave and thank you. It's no good saying that you are now back to working on bits without a showing init mate! Where are the pikkies, please!!

Well, ya know what is often said on the woodworking forums - NO PICS - NEVER DONE! :wink

Last year we 'cleaned out' our son's bedroom (became a storage place for my wife and could not even walk on the floor!) - I built some end tables then (first pic - believe I may have shown these before?), this year made a small dresser w/ 2 drawers (2nd pic) - NOW, we need to buy a bed (could make one but a MAJOR project for an aging woodworker, me thinks).

Most recently a new spice rack (we've started to cook together and became more interested in using spices/herbs) - same width x length to fit, but an 1 1/2" deeper so holds nearly twice the number of bottles. The wood a favorite of mine, spalted maple (or ambrosia due to the beetle that infests the wood) (3rd pic). Dave

That's joinery Dave and it doesn't count because I am totally useless at it :Blushing::Blushing:

If I could I would love to make some bits like those. I love the contrast between the woods. I have never even seen ambrosia and it looks to be a lovely wood to work with. Well done on all of that mate and I hope that there are more of us that can show just what wood they too have been butchering :app:app

Thanks John - much appreciated! :)

Just love that spalted maple (other species of maple & different woods can become 'infected') - the ambrosia beetle bores holes in the wood (often stressed or dying trees), thus the little holes - and carries a symbiotic fungus that adds the streaks of coloring (I've seen a lot of 'turned' art works w/ this wood incorporated) - I buy UPS craft bundles from Wall Lumber a couple of hours north near the Virginia border, and one of the cheapest choices because considered 'defective' - at first, I was making a bunch of picture frames (one below) but need to come up w/ some more substantial projects. Nice work guys. Then again, I bet you hear that all the time.

By that logic nothing either of you has done counts because I can't do it? I like that.

@Dave I've seen other things made from woods that might be considered by some to be defective. To me that's part of the character of the pieces.

Hi Sly - love those woods that are stressed, infected, defective, or recycled - below is a gorgeous table made from ambrosia maple (off the web - yours for just $2600) - AND turned pieces made from burled woods are just beautiful - we own a number of items (bowls, vases, etc.) - John is going to love our turned burl vase below (2nd pic) - so, I'm quite fond of these woods. These items are quite well done and as with most things I like well outside of my price range.:sd

When I was in college students enrolled in the Industrial Arts program would show off some of their work each Spring. I always stopped to look at the pieces on display (especially the bookcases/shelves). The price tags on items that were for sale weren't unreasonable given the work involved but lets just say my budget left a lot to be desired.

Well Dude you wouldn't be able to afford wot I make then mate. Most things then you wouldn't get change out of a pony mate! (someone explain if needed please O:) )

This is one of my favourite 'defective' bits of wood. Just a 3" cube of spalted cherry and my biggest difficulty is when I pick it up I don't want to put it down, very tactile!

I made a second one just to prove to muself that it wasn't a fluke? I'm glad to say that it wasn't although I have tried 2 more, but the oak I was turning had a fault in it and I now have a 'several' bit 3D jigsaw puzzle :[:[

Beautiful John - believe I may have seen the smaller images, but not the large one which shows the coloring nicely - there are a wide number of 'ambrosia' beetle and fungal species that can attack different kinds of trees (more info HERE for those interested) - I like the light color of the spalted maple - and just checked my local supplier who carries only that wood; could search online for other tree varietals? Dave :)

My hobby/passion has been cery good to me. It is a paying hobby and all of the tools I have have been paid for by what I have made and when we decided to get this MacBook Pro 13 I managed to almost completely pay for it with the pens I madeat £17 each! When I look back that is a boat load of pens!

I decided on the shape because I found it easier for my arthritic hand to hold. The lower one was an experiment using ply wood. I've done a few like that, but it quite often fails.:'(

This has stayed quiet for a while, but now for a different tack.

A while back I was asked to make some crochet hooks and so far have done about 40 for 2 different ladies, one a local shop. I quite like doing them as they are relatively simple with care.
15 hooks for Liz copy.jpg
Then an experiment with black walnut and beech that I really like
Walnut beech hooks.jpg
Since then one of the ladies asked me if I could do some large knitting needles? How large said I? Dammed HUGE said she

3 pair Exreme knitting needles.jpg
Those are my safety glasses sat on the 40mm X 63cm accoya/oak at the back, then 30mm X 63cm black walnut/oak and 25mm X 50cm black walnut/box wood!

Originally I thought that they were for a window display in her shop? They are for very strong ladies to knit with, called mega knitting. On a woodwork forum I was asked if they are used to knit chain link fencing?

So, what has everyone else been up to? Please show us.

Hey John.....

Those large knitting needles look more like baseball bats used to play US baseball. :p

Beautiful wood with a fine polished finish. Nice job John.

Too bad you don't live in my neighborhood because I could certainly use you to do some wood flooring for me. LOL

Hi John - glad to see you back in the shop! :) Love the items in your last few posts - well done, indeed! And I'm sure the ladies enjoyed them as well.

I've not been doing a lot in the basement (although w/ COVID isolation, there is plenty of time!) - ordered some craft wood bundles from my local NC supplier a few months ago and made a small jewelry box for a friend of the wife (BUT did not take any pics - DRAT! Used cherry and ambrosia maple - quite nice). My only other project was making a frame (from quarter sawn white oak) for a photo that I purchased from David Shipper, a local nature photographer now in Savannah, GA - I love pelicans!

But, I still have plenty of wood (for some small projects left) - need a NEW project! Dave

Excellent work, gents. Under no circumstances should anyone on the forum shoe these to my SWMBO. Crochet, knitting, and the like are among her favorite things to do to pass the time. If she sees those, she's going to want them.

That's a lovely frame Dave and it suits the photo completely. I have never been very god at joining bits of wood off the lathe, but you have it cracked.

The only way I can get it is with band saw boxes and I had an idea still to do with the sewing/knitting/crochet scene. A pin box with a magnetic lid :oops: It works fine and I think it looks good to. A storage place for the pins and handy to use..
Mag pin boxes.jpg

And a yarn bowl. The yarn is chucked in it for knitting or crochet and it doesn't roll about and get all screwed up. This on is tulip tree wood and the 'slot' for the yarn was a crack in the blank that was made for the slot. I was sad to sell it.
Tulip wood yern bowl 1.JPG

hat crack made it quite intersting to turn Tulip wood yern bowl 2.JPG

That crack made it quite interesting to turn
