At the funeral, I misquoted Mark Twain (unknowingly): I said, "when I was 18, I thought dad was out of touch with reality, but when I reached the age of 22, I realised how much he had matured in these 4 years."

Hey Ian. From what I'm reading...seems you got the Mark Twain quotation mostly correct...mostly just some differences in the ages mentioned.:)

Maybe your version of the quote is a more updated version.:)

In Mark Twain's day...youngsters needed (or were required) to grow up more quickly (compared to more modern times)...thus Mark Twains 14 & 21 years old turned into your more modern-age quote of 18 & 22 years old. And if we modified the Mark Twain quote to be an even more modern (current day version)...maybe the original 14 & 21 years old would need to be something more like 25 & 30??...or more!;)

I was referring to the well known fact, as late teenagers, we think we know it all. In my case, because of WW2, I was born when my father was 36, so, naturally, when I started University at 18, my dad was 54/55 years old. He died at the age of 87.

Incredible! Those statistics apply to me as well!

Purely out of interest, this quotation was used in the Jack Lemmon/Walter Matthau film "The Fortune Cookie" which I remember well.

Samuel Clement aka Mark Twain visited my home town of Newcastle NSW Australia in the 1890's and said 'An uninteresting town with a hospital at one end of the main street and a cemetery at the other'!

He escaped by train back to Sydney before the lynch mob arrived alas.

Hi Harry - from the first pic below, looks like Newcastle has 'grown up' since Twain's visit - :D Just curious since your 'home' (now) is listed as Nambucca Heads - had to check the map app - you're about 3 1/2 hrs by car north of the city - must be lovely there!

Back about 1990, we had a Gastroenterology fellow named E.G. Hewson (known as 'Ted') from Australia - we wrote a few papers together on esophageal motility - he returned to Newcastle to practice (not sure if he went into academics or private practice?). Dave :)

And more than one hospital at one end as well... at least according to google maps... ;-)

It certainly looks a lot nicer than his description as well.

not a quote as such, but the inscription on Spike Milligan's (a British - well, Irish actually - comedian and national institution) headstone reads:

"I told you I was ill"

I especially like that last quote. It reminds me of all the political noise we are currently being subjected to here in the US. Unfortunately, it's going to get even worse as we draw near to November 2020.

A couple "side-thought's" to this. Ambrose Bierce passed away in 1914 (105 years ago)...and he was commenting on how lottery's were a "Tax on people who were bad at math."

* Just goes to show that all of the various lottery's run by various governments around the world that lottery's are nothing new (not a new/newish phenomenon).
* We would think that in the last (at least) 105 years...that the average person's math skills would have improved (due to the overall better/more available education around the world). But lots & lots of "educated" folks still play the lottery regularly...and they all think/hope they will be "the one" to win!;)

I cannot remember whose quote this is but by gum it is very true:

Sometime when you are feeling important, sometime when your ego is in bloom
sometime when you feel that you are the most important man in the room
sometime when you feel that your going would leave as unfillable hole
just follow these simple instructions and see how the humble your sole.

Take a bucket and fill it with water and put your hands in it up to your wrists
take them out and the hole that remains is a measure of how much you will be missed
you may splash all you like as you enter, you may store up the water galore
but stop and you will find in a minute that it looks just the same as before.

The moral of this is quite simple, just do the best that you can
be proud of yourself but remember, the is no indispensable man!

Hi toMACsh, Thank you for that information, my brain does not seem to work as well as it used to. The elevator does not go up to the top floor very often these days!

Very best regards from Keith in Derby England,
