We block spam posters, but One More Thing... is the champion spammer. Can we maybe give One More Thing a separate forum so I can ignore it better? There are so many posts it pushes out everything else.

Make it stop, please.

I agree with Jake. Maybe I missed it, but what is the purpose of releasing this bot?

I think that there are good intentions behind this venture. It is primarily to raise awareness of articles and tips relating to Apple products.

Initially, there were a lot of Windows-only posts, but these have almost all disappeared.

Whilst some of the posts are interesting and, indeed, contain useful information or tips relating to Apple products, it's my view anyway, that these be given a "Forum or Enclosure" of their own.

This way, people can choose if/when they want to view them.

As it stands now, they are included under "New Posts" and I find that a touch irritating as they sometimes outnumber what I would call real "New Posts".

That's my feedback.:)

Ian said it ever so much better than I did, and he was more diplomatic about it, but he nailed it.

Seconding Ian. I'm scanning who wrote the post to avoid OMT!

Just out of curiosity how many of these posts are you guys seeing now? Initially I was seeing several at a time and they were in danger of pushing member posts to my second page. After the keywords that One More Thing uses to search with were modified a few days ago, the number of posts by OMT has become much less og an annoyance. I'm seeing a few at a time.

This morning about two thirds of the "new posts" on the opening page sidebar were from the bot. Others had been pushed off the list completely.

Maybe I'm not seeing that problem because I tend to check the New Posts page daily and sometimes a few times a day. Still, I did a search for OMT a minute ago and only found about 15 posts between 3/14/19 and now. There were more listed before 3/14 but I didn't try to count those. The titles of the 15 or so posts all seemed fairly relevant.

I really liked Ian's post and his idea. I am 100% for the posts. We are trying to get more posting going on here on the forums thus the bot.

Since Nick has done his tweaking with the feed I am seeing a lot more Apple Specific posts from the Bot which I like.

Here's some "food for thought". We would like to see daily forum activity increase significantly with various projects planned for the future (RSS articles being one of them).:) The relatively small number of 10-20 RSS threads/day at the moment (in the long term) are really minimal.:)

As forum members...you don't NEED to interact with EVERY NEW post or every NEW thread (of course it's awesome if you can or if you want to).:) It's the choice of each & every forum member to choose what threads & what posts they become involved with. If we were to start seeing 100+ new threads/day and 400-500 new posts/day...that's a lot of new content/day for every member to stay involved with (whew)!;)

You can choose to be selective.:) If you visit the forum once/day (or more)...and you see 30 new or existing threads created or updated in the new posts area...you can choose to interact with the threads that interest you...and choose not to interact with the other threads.:)

Once you have interacted with the new threads & new posts you wish to interact with each forum visit...then you can:

- Go the the Navbar (available on just about every forum page).
- Click on the "Forum Actions" link.
- Then click on "Mark Forums Read".

This will mark all new threads & all new posts (that were NOT interacted with during that member's visit) as read.:)

HTH,

- Nick

p.s. Of course we want to insure (as much as possible) that EVERY new thread receives at least one response.:) Each thread posted is very important to the member posting..thus we want each & every thread to have at least one helpful post...so the OP knows we got their back!:) No orphan threads please.:)

If it was not an administrator we could ignore.........

For one, am never going to open anything from the bot.

In case anyone is wondering.... Our Forum Bot needs Admin status because it ferrets out registration violations and also issues bans. Our regular membership does not see what goes on behind the regular forum traffic. The Staff spends considerable time answering "Contact Us" inquiries and responding to folks who forgot their password or can't remember how to sign on, and a myriad of other things that come up.

So please be patient with the RSS feeds. If you do not wish to read them, move on and just read those posts that interest you. After reading thru all the forum posts that you like, do as Nick suggested above and mark the forums as read.

I think we have the "RTC" syndrome going on. :wink

It's not RTC, and I think the accusation that it is RTC is just an attempt to rationalize a really bad decision.

It's a lousy change that leads to spam posting. If we have to have that <<expletive>> bot posting, force it into a forum we can ignore, and block the random, useless posts from showing up in the New Post list or on the Activity Stream on the main page. Yes, I can mark a forum read, and often do that, but that bot posts so much that REAL posts get pushed off the Activity Stream, which I (used to) find very handy.

I will accept that some folks might find what the bot posts interesting, and I'm not adamant that the bot be killed (even though personally that would be my option), but don't foist it on all of the visitors here. Confine the thing. Let people's posts some before bot posts. That's the point, the <<expletive>> bot is taking priority over people who have real issues and want real help. A bot should NEVER be able to push a real post down any list anywhere, ever.

It's not RTC,

I agree (as a member of a committee for another organization that is proposing multiple changes to how we do things). It's just plain annoying that OMT has taken over the Lounge and made it difficult to find threads started by members and guests. It seriously needs to be toned down. I guess having a OMT Forum would not serve its purpose. Is it possible to have an Auto Delete function for any OMT post not receiving replies after a set time? If no one is posting and starting a "conversation" with other people, the posts are not very useful. If one reads it and likes the info presented, but does not want to post a reply, one should click the "like" button. Oh wait, we'd have to add that button...

I agree with most thoughts here. Maybe OneMoreThing, should be a forum onto itself? Or a link like “New Posts”?

Too many...
Here's my input on this.

I don't believe the forum needs a bot to create new posts, regardless of what it relates to.

Any bot that creates automatic posts should have a dedicated area to post them, and not have them mixed with user posts.
These posts that are put up by OMT are also low quality posts most of the time. Waste of space if you ask me. Creating new threads and posts that have NOTHING in them except for a link is just stupid in my opinion. Unless OMT is linking to outside posts as a way of generating revenue, there should be no reason for an article to need to link away from the forum as a way to get to that information. In my opinion, quoting the article within the post is the best way to creating these new posts.

In the end, I believe all this automated posting really does is dilute the content that forum members truly care about. I believe the forum members should be the ones who judge what news, rumor, or other related content deserves to posted. There should be zero reason for OMT to post a new thread on a 10,000mAH battery in the Apple Rumors and Reports section.

More focus should be placed on growing and enhancing the forum to allow greater cohesion and communication between members.

Maybe on the Home Page, below Activity Stream, etc?
