Id like to get an external dvd/cd burner for my imac. does it need to be apple brand or would something else work? I bought a cheap one months ago, LG brand... 20 bucks. but it wont let me boot from it. guess it has to be apple brand to boot from it? no idea what I should get or how much to spend, or where to buy it from. need some info/ideas. thanks.

If you need to boot, Apple Superdrive. Pretty dear alas. Why do you need to boot from a DVD? HS etc all came as a digital download.
Hang on to those original install discs like grim death! Using OS X.7 or later make a bootable USB thumb drive before running Installer!

guess I don't need to boot from it. Just use to being able to do that. old habits are hard to change.

what would be a good choice if I did not get the Apple Superdrive?

Well I have a Samsung cheapie, SE-208, $28 and it is bus powered. However to boot from DVDs found it necessary to get one with two SP leads to get sufficient power. Looks like they have gone up a doller, but in the US you should be looking at about $20.00.
