I have been a PC gamer mostly, but I decided to be more company loyal. I got rid of my gaming PC and only use my macbook pro and decided to get a Console instead.

I am a big fan of sony Tvs as my dad always was, and I went and bought a Playstation 3 today. But now I am wondering if I should return it and get a Xbox? I figure xbox is made by microsoft - so should us apples side with microsoft as we do in Office Software against the Japanese, or should I side with Sony?

For you gamers who are Macs, do you prefer Xbox or Ps3? I like the ps3, is it okay for me to keep it or should i get the xbox?

Also I hear xbox is more mainstream than ps3, so we should prefer ps3 right?

thanks

Those are all wrong reasons to choose a system.
I had all current systems at once at one point. Wii turned into a netflix streaming box. Xbox rips you off with XBLive. Got rid of them all and kept the PS3. My opinion is skewed heavily towards online gaming. If all you care about is playing locally, it doesn't matter what you get. For online, it's PS3 for me. I went in to Gamestop to get a 360 just because of the "new, low $99.99 Xbox 360." Went in to find out it requires a full monthly subscription of Xbox Live for 2 years. which would total ~$500 just to get a 360 and play online. That's the definition of ludicrous! If Sony did this same thing with their setup, no one would ever hear the end of it from MSFT users.

Also, it's not exactly good timing to pay full price for a new console when the next gens are around the corner.

IMHO...just because Apple and Microsoft are competitors in some areas...and we use Apple computers...does not necessarily extend to some sort of "self-imposed ban" on anything Microsoft puts their name on.

As far as the PS3 vs. XBox question...just get whatever best meets your needs...and totally ignore who makes the product (Sony or Microsoft).

Of course if Sony produces a television that somehow interacts more seamlessly with a PS3...and these possible features are important to you...then get the PS3. Otherwise...get whatever meets your needs.:)

What does being an Apple user have to do with this? Unless you're talking about media streaming, being an Apple user has nothing to do with this choice.

Also I hear xbox is more mainstream than ps3, so we should prefer ps3 right?
"We"? We're all different people with different needs. Use what you like, not what "we" are supposed to like. And let's not forget that owning an Apple devices makes you just as mainstream as anyone else (if, for some reason, this is a concern).

I think you're trying to decide based on false criteria. Buy the product you like, not based on rather flimsy allegiances and historic rivalries.

I agree. I buy what I need based on several criteria - not just a brand. My DSLR is Canon but my printer is HP, not Canon.

If you're a gamer (I'm not) and you can identify a superior gaming platform that provides the quality, experience, and game titles that you want, go with that one. Whatever brand it may be.

Doesn't matter what Ecosystem you use for Console gaming. Should get the console that has the games that you want to play. Sometimes they have exclusive titles.

If you got money to throw get both. I wouldn't get either of them right now though as the New PS4 and XboX are coming out soon.

I think first and foremost, you need to change your entire mindset about the things you seem to care so much about. At the end of the day it really doesn't matter..

Having said that, I used to be a PC gamer for a long time and finally give it up around 2005 or so after some new game I bought wanted me to upgrade some part of my PC to work properly and having JUST upgraded the machine just 6 month prior, I wasn't in the mood and decided to end PC gaming there and then (THIS, IMHO is a VALID reason to give up PC gaming, not that the PC is made by Dell or it's not a Mac)..

Anyway, at that point my brother had a PS2 and XBOX and liked them both and when I went looking the XBOX 360 and PS3 were out and from what I remember there were a couple of games that I wanted to play and they were XBOX exclusive so I went with that..I opted not to purchase the PS3 as well since over time I've gotten less time to play games..

I also have a Nintendo that I bought for my wife and daughter. But when the Kinect was released for the X360, I got that and my wife and daughter like that a lot more and the Wii just sits there..

I don't like the PS motion controller, but as a console with the games it's perfectly fine. The exclusive like God of War, Uncharted, Infamous have almost made me look into getting the PS3, but with the Last of Us, I might just get the PS4..:)

Now a lot of exclusive games have slowly migrated to the other consoles, but it takes a long time for games that aren't published by Sony. But for games published by Sony, they never exclusive status..

So technically, as a console gamer, having both the PS3/4 and X360 is the best combination since you open yourself to all the exclusives as well as the games available on both consoles..

You need to stop trying so hard to constantly fit in or side with this company or that company..spend your money on things that you enjoy..

I agree with everyone else about not considering the Xbox because it's Microsoft. I know I love my Xbox, but if you want to buy something now you should go with the PS3 because it have more exclusive and most games (besides a few) that are on Xbox you can get on the PS3. I'd say do this because the new Xbox is coming out eventually and I'd rather buy something that will tide me over until then (even though the PS4 is coming out soon) so that I can buy something that I know I'll enjoy more in the long run.

Keep this in mind as well: only one of those consoles can be used as a bluray player.

If you're looking for a cheap Blu-ray player and free online, go with Playstation 3. The PS3's online experience isn't the best, it can get slow and sluggish at times; it's free, so you really can't complain. You will get constant updates on just about every app, they're long and very annoying. The menu layout is atrociously painful to get around, menu after menu. Did I mention the annoying updates? Because it gets annoying.

The Xbox doesn't have a Blu-ray player, and you have to pay a fee for online. You can pick up a year subscription for $49 (Sometimes they'll have it for $45!) on Amazon, that's the best option. Aside from the annoying fee, if you care about online quality, Xbox is the best way to game online with the current consoles. The menu layout is simple and very enjoyable, uploads are quicker, and updates are not as frequent as the Playstation 3.

There is a $99 Xbox, but it's not worth it. There is a 2 year subscription fee, ($14.99 a month) that is overpriced. While you're lock with that said 2 years keep in mind, everyone but you will be on the next generation consoles, because you're locked into a 2 year contract. Basically, stay away from this horrible "deal", because you don't want to pay early termination fees.

Playstation 4 will be out later this year, while the Xbox has not confirmed any news yet. Xbox will reveal more information in April, however, I would suggest you read up on the current rumors of the next Xbox. Another thing to take into consideration is, how well will these system run? The Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 had a huge amount of flaws at launch, i'd personally would hold off.

It comes down to the game library, I would see what each one has to offer. No one can really tell you what to like, do some research.

If I were to get a new gaming console it would probably be a Sony. I have a old PS1 and loved it for it's time. Microsoft has nothing to do with my feelings about Xbox. I just prefer the PS3. Nothing to do with the brand. Just the way it works.

Hmmm...where to start?? Had all consoles from when they first came out. Bought first white 360 when it first came out-RRoD right after the warranty ran out-managed to fix it by reflowing, but crapped out a few months later. Bought first PS3 when it first came out-sold it after being too busy. Bought second 360 Halo edition-sold it QUICKLY after noticing intermitint RRoD. Bought second PS3(V2), and have kept it ever since. In all, I've had plenty of times to compare everything possible, including the HD-DVD I also had since the first 360, between the two consoles. I bought a Wii within that time, but didn't mention it here because no one cares about it. I picked up a 4gb 360 at a garage sale for $110 over the weekend. Couldn't really say no to that price and what it came with(Forza4/CoD-MW3/BO1).

Any online platform will be crap if your internet is crap. Poeple usually make the statement that "it's free so you can't complain," but praise Xbox Live while it still has the same EXACT problems, and you PAY for it. Xbox Live is a scam! You should not need Xbox Live to enable your 360 to use online programs/apps. My slowest internet speeds with both 360/PS3 was 6mbps down/1.5mbps up(which was MANY years ago). Both systems had lag issues. Now I have 50mbps down and 5mbps up, and both systems run well. Never have problems on the PS3, as I usually get host, yet still manage to run into server issues with the 360, especially when playing Halo or Gear of War. If you truly value "quality gaming," step up and pay extra for quality INTERNET SERVICE, instead of the right to play online. XBL matches online players by different parameters that don't include internet connection speeds as a priority. PSN matches players by grouping those with similar speeds together, along with those that can carry other people that might lag(only noticeable to the lagger). This is also why almost all PS3 game have a selectable option for connection settings when searching for game lobbies. On the PSN, if you notice lag, it's because you are lagging behind other players. On the 360, the servers pick up random people, and you notice lag from those random people, regardless of your internet speed(since you can't be host). Obviously there are also other exceptions such as host quitting, server issues, on both consoles.

You will get constant updates on just about every app, they're long and very annoying.
An update is an update, and a game update is equal on all consoles, with expection to special patches. Having owned all systems, when one system got an update for something, it was also released on the other systems.

--talking about the PS3---The menu layout is atrociously painful to get around, menu after menu. Did I mention the annoying updates? Because it gets annoying.
Greatly disagree. PS3 has had the same basic layout since launch, and still runs very well, and is very consistent. the 360 has had numurious dashboard upgrades, and every one of them has slowed the system down even more. I guess you don't remember the first blade-style dashboard if you think the new 360 dashboard is simple and enjoyable.

If you truly care about online gaming, you would not own a console. Considering you are paying for service, the 360's "Xbox Live" should be ABSOLUTELY trouble free, yet you can get just as many online issues as with the PS3.

FORZA. The only reason I need a 360.

FORZA. The only reason I need a 360.

Just had to point that out.

I have a great internet connection, I won't go as far as saying it's the best, but I've personally never had problems with it other than the router dying. Internet is internet to me, if I can go online without it being slow and sluggish I am a very happy person.

Playstation online is horrible, there is no point being coy - it's horrible. Xbox Live is the best choice for gaming online between the three consoles that generation with my experience. That's the reason Microsoft continues to milk it. XBL does not have the same issues as the PSN. I don't recall having my information taken from XBL. However, it did happen on PSN. I will never forget that, there is no feasible answer to justify that. XBL is the better option for console gaming online in my opinion. Sure it's overpriced, but if you have the money go you! I will join XBL if a friend gets a new game and wants me to join, the $20 for three months works for me, other than that, PC for multiplayer is the way to go. I love my video games, i've never limited myself to just one console.

I will admit that it's silly to have XBL to watch paid subscription apps.

I had to watch the recent Playstation conference on my Xbox, because PSN crashed for just about everyone! I have a video of the creepy slow motion Playstation 4 conference speech and the angry chatroom on PSN, I wouldn't mind uploading it to YouTube. Typical PSN crap, gotta love it

I honestly don't remember the last time I updated an app on my 360, when I did, it was no longer than a few seconds (15 seconds max). Playstation on the other hand feels like it's a daily thing, they're long and annoying; I walk away and come back when it's finish, because it's annoyingly long. I update an app at least 5-7 times a month. Annoying.

The PS3 menu layout is horrible, there is too much too look at. I want to game, not look at a ton of text'd options. With 360 I can slide side to side with nice size picture. I honestly don't care what the layout used to look like on the 360, as long as I can slide over with simplicity without having to second guess where to go. I'm not sure if you've seen the recent screen shots of what the new Playstation menu will look like, but it's BEAUTIFUL! The menus on PS3 are horrible and Sony realizes that now.

I'm not bashing Playstation, I love the system, I just hate their menus, updates and online interruptions. This is my experience with the console, if you don't agree with my opinions that's fine, understandable. :)

I got Xbox for Alan Wake - AMAZING GAME! I later got into the Gears series; I didn't think it was going to be good, I picked up all three games for $10 used in pristine condition at GameStop. It was surprisingly good.

I got the Playstation 3 for it's amazing deal at the time, 250gb slim with Uncharted 3, Batman AA and Split Second (I only wanted Uncharted 3 and Batman). Other than Journey, I don't think PS3 has any other exclusive game that interests me.

I've had a 360 since 2007ish. It has more exclusives that favor my tastes. The PS3 has one exclusive that I was kinda interested in, but the competition on the 360 proved to be a much better game.
