I know everyone has different experiences but here is mine when it comes to playing the PS3 online, and this happens whenever I turn it on (Most days).

Turn on PS3. Wait approximately 5 seconds for the XMB to show up. Click the game icon. Wait for game to load. Click on multiplayer. Enjoy.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think it gets much more fluid than that, maybe it's just the games I play, or I'm blessed with good PS3. From powering up to playin takes about 2 minutes.

When I had my 360 I noticed no difference whatsoever between the two. Seriously, I don't know why people flame the PS3 online experience so much.

... but I prefer that my friends are able to get my past time references and not say things like... "What the heck is Tom and Jerry" etc.. ;)

A co-worker just a couple of days ago told me his daughter (19 yrs old) had made the comment she wanted a monkey. He asked her if she wanted one like Cheetah. She asked him, "Who's Cheetah?". He said Tarzan's Cheetah - she still shook her head in non-comprehension.

That's ok, my main intention is for online game play and I wouldn't settle for anything other than the gold membership. I was also told that the Vudu network is quite good for streaming tv shows, and that it bests Hulu+. Can you speak to that experience? There's also another streaming service, but can't remember the name of it. It's supposed to be platform independent.
Vudu is pretty good, but its a service that you have to pay for as a pay-per-play setup. I user it very rarely because, even though it offers the best image quality, I still prefer to watch a show for free. I do blame it for getting me addicted to a few shows that I never knew existed, though.

Everything about the PS3 does sound great, but it amazes me that everyone I've spoken with whom owns both makes the same claims about the online gaming experience. I wonder if the phenomenon is location specific?

Doug

I'm sure many things can cause this difference of opinion, but I believe the greatest one is that people don't actually know the true experience of using both systems, and just go spreading what someone else has said. I think it's a stigma that has stuck since the PS3 first came out. It actually really surprises me because if you ask a sale's person at Gamestop about ps3 vs. the 360, they will instantly favor the 360, but if you rebuttal with a smart response, they will tense up and and give you the impression that they are about to pull a shank out. I don't know what it is with some people and the 360...it's just a game console, but they stick up for it as if their life depended on it. That makes me like the PS3 even more.

It's possible that he is using Wifi for the PS3 and is wired for the Xbox.

Maybe you should ask him about it? I haven't had any problems and mine are setup that way (Xbox wired, PS3 wireless).

You have to remember when talking to people... This stuff is like Android vs the iPhone, OSX vs Windows... Many people are extremely biased. It's some sort of loyalty issue, I suppose...

Man, I miss Tarzan. I grew up watching it with my grandfather. It was one of his favorites I think. That, and the Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy etc... It's not exactly surprising that a 19 year old wouldn't know what those things were though, as the only things that are pushed in our faces now have to deal with sex and violence on TV. It kind of blows my mind that modern sitcoms are so witless and hack. If you took away the laugh track on 99% of today's shows, you'd wonder what the heck you were watching and why!

Compare the likes of say... the Honeymooners to something like I dunno... Yes Dear or The World according to Jim. I don't really watch those shows but have seen a few episodes because of them playing in the background. Nothing about them is interesting or funny, just hack schtick with a laugh track. I find very little truly funny with modern sitcoms, if anything at all. Seinfeld was really good, but Larry David in general is a ham but it works well for him, which is why I really enjoy Curb Your Enthusiasm.

For what very little TV I do watch these days, it's hard for me to find things that bring up the emotional responses which were evoked by those shows I remember growing up. And it's not just a nostalgia thing, either.

On topic, I'd like to fire the program directors at TBS. Maybe it's because I'm white and can't "relate", but none of Tyler Perry's shows are funny in the least bit to me. Yet it seems like every year he's got a new show with the same exact premise. Then again, I loved The Fresh Prince of Bel Air so... Oh, and that new show The Big Bang Theory? Worst dreck since I don't know when. Most unfunny stuff ever. Another one where if the laugh track wasn't there, you'd have to wonder what the heck they were talking about.

And Doug, not sure about the online gaming part as I have never used that. I do have friend with both and they use Online a lot. Will ask them ASAP and report back.

Thanks, I'd really appreciate that. But more importantly, enjoy the turkey and time with family/friends!

I really enjoy Modern Family. It's just about the only show that I find funny.

I would agree with you on The Big Bang Theory. I don't find it funny one bit. Other shows just make me uncomfortable watching - especially with family.

I generally find the decent shows just as they are ending.

Case in point: Barney Miller. I was over visiting my Father-in-law one day and he was watching TV, so I sat down to watch with him. It was like the 3rd or 4th episode before the series ended.

I did get to watch in reruns though, so it wasn't a total miss.

Good one. I liked Barney miller too. Add to that, Sanford and Son, Cheers, and one of my old time favorites as a kid was What's happenin'. That show ruled. Something more modern in the way of a comedy would be Scrubs.

Anyway, I hope everybody had a great day with their loved ones for thanksgiving. We just got back and are stuffed. Tomorrow is going to be a long day, my first time ever working retail and on Black Friday at that.

After a crazy long day, and some help along the way plus last moment research, I made a decision! It wasn't easy, but the sale price I saw online was too good to pass up. Before I say which system I bought, I want to vent a bit about how poor Beast Buy's business practices are. Right off the bat, I used Apple's new "in store pick up" service with which to compare that of Best Buy's similarly named service. This was my first mistake. I know for a fact that when Apple sets expectations for its customers, they go above and beyond to try and make good on their goals. This has never been a credo assosiated with many other, if any other big chain electronics retailer, and especially not for BB.

So the online deal was for the console, two free games and something else I won't name as that would give away what I got. Cost of the package? $200. Straight up new, no refurbs. I put my credit card info in and am told that I'll get an email confirmation when it's ready to pick up in store. 5 minutes later I get said email. Cool, so far so good. I get to bait and switch Buy, go to the in store pick up counter and confirm who I am. A few minutes later, out comes my Order, or so I thought. The guy helping me (whom was very nice) looks at the thing as he's typing and says " oh cr@ p... This isn't the holiday bundle!".

Long atory short (for now), he runs around like a chicken without a head for a while, coming back each time stating they're nowhere to be found and he's confused because the system shows 25 units in stock. Well...the reason it's showing this? Because the SKU's are supposedly the same for the bundle and for the stand alone unit. Personally speaking, that sounds fishy to me, but still possible of course. he then tries to pass me along to another BB, while saying that there's nothing guaranteeing they'll have it either. Heck, he couldn't just call another store and get someone to personally check ? I know that I'd do that.

Then he says that maybe I want to just get the console only, but it's the same price minus the extras. Um....no? What's the point then? Granted, it's still a $100 discount alone, but I want what I ordered and was told to pick up! After trying to find a supervisor for 20 minutes (seriously) and having several of his co workers just look on with contempt, as if to say "supervisor? What's that?". He comes back with an look of defeat and doesn't know what else to say or do. I'm exhausted and not thrilled now and was about to walk, when he spotted the ever elusive supervisor!

Longer story shorter, the manager authorizes giving me half off of any two games I want, so long as they're $60 each. I'm thinking not great, but better than the alternatives. I look at the games and don't see any for more than $30 because of the sale.. Picked two and went back to get rung up. Turns out one of them was actually $60 but the other was indeed $30. He gave me half of on both anyway. So $45 for two games is ok I suppose, especially considering they weren't the games which were supposed to come with the package.

And now for the answer as to which I bought: the other item included in the box is a headset, and it was also SUPPOSED TO come with a free three month Xbox Live Gold subscription. :). As for why I chose the Xxbox? That will have to wait until tomorrow. I did get the 3 month gold membership btw, but it was 7 bucks.

Thanks again to everybody who contributed in this thread, your helP really did matter. Oh...I bought Battlefield 3 and Call Of Duty. I'm considering exchanging Battlefield though...the sales guy told me that the game has lag issues non related to online play. Going to investigate before I open it.

Oh My! Best Buy at their finest! I had issues recently with a cordless phone they had on their page for $24 and it said it was $24 at my local BB also. Went there and they tried to charge me $40. I was FIRM and got it for the $24! What a hassle though!

Let us know how you like your Xbox.

Sounds about right Doug. I use that online buy and pick up at BB when I can get something at the same price as Amazon but pick it up today. Have used it maybe 15 times over the last couple of years - they're batting about 50% - having what it was I ordered sitting behind the counter waiting for me. The other half, it's still sitting on the shelf in the store - split about half and half between they just hadn't picked it yet or they picked the wrong item..

Are you telling me that BestBuy didn't know that their 360 and PS3 bundles came as a bundle consisting of them wrapping 2 game around the console's original box(which is the reason why the sku came up the same)? How stupid of them! I'm willing to bet a lot of money that they just didn't want to give you the online deal price without having you pay tax for it. Gamestop does that shady stuff too.

Interesting. Sounds like I'd have a legit case with which to bring up to a GM in order to refund the extra money I spent. is there nothing else involved other than them wrapping said games? I'm pretty sure that only Microsoft can authorize the bundling of their online subscription cards, so I wonder if there are other hoops BB has to jump through.

Don't get me started on Gamestop. I bought a brand new DS game there once for $40. Beat it, and brought it back 2 weeks later as a trade in towards a new game. They wanted to give me $2 for it! No joke, $2. I told them to forget it, I'll just keep it for that. Such a ripoff.

I wouldn't say I'm 100% confident, but that's what I noticed at my local Best Buy on friday. I don't think Microsoft can force them to do anything in regards to their XBL prices. They had their PS3 bundles wrapped with a red rubber band, and the 360 with blue green rubber bands. They are selling some PS3/360 games at half off! The 360 bundle had a download card redeemable for a free game, Fable 3, and 3 months of xbox live. They also had some other bundles that weren't mentioned anywhere(360, extra controller, 12 months of xbox live, and a turtle beach headset). I went and picked up NFS: The Run for 30 bucks! Then I took a trip to Gamestop to show them what I paid and booked it. I hate GameStop! Now that I think of it, I probably should have also picked up Gears of War 3, Forza 4, and Battlefield. Oh well.

I don't know what it is but, I haven't slept well at all in the past two days. Work has been extra grueling and I've been anxious on top of it all. I'll try to explain my reasoning to the best of my currently limited abilities though...

As much as I'd love to have an equally powerful media center in my gaming console, I'm ultimately more concerned with the online gaming experience. I'm also more concerned with security. On my own, I researched the resources that Sony uses for its database administration and security implementations. What I found was that they outsource these duties to a single firm, and pretty much stay out of the loop.

It's no wonder that they were hacked almost 3 times in the past year. That was a big deal for me, and I'm not comfortable with the fact that Sony doesn't care enough to spend extra to take care of their customers the way that Microsoft has.

For this reason alone, I'm fine with spending $60 a year in order to ensure that MS continues to use said money to maintain their networks and in-house security administration. Just seems to me that Sony don't have a clue in this area.

Secondly, but not as important as the first reason, is that yes... I'll have people I know playing in a clan with me. I didn't care about that initially, but even the people I spoke with who own PS3's, also own 360's for online gaming only.

Third, the price was right! $200 for the 320 gig system alone is pretty good, since it's usually $299. Getting the games free would have been great, but the discount is decent and I got the games I really wanted instead of the freebies. Still, I probably would have purchased the Kinect next week if I had gotten the games for free.. Guess that will be her Christmas gift instead.

There are other small reasons too I guess, but those are the personal logic details, and am honestly too tired to get into that right now! :Blushing:

I may wind up going to Best Buy near my house tomorrow and ask to talk to a manager to see what they have to say about this. I'm also considering taking back Battlefield 3, because of reports about the game being laggy due to shoddy programming. Otherwise, I don't care too much right now because I'm exhausted and feel that the price was alright anyhow. But I won't be trading in the other games for the initially offered ones, either way.
