It was Macstack.net, was mostly great and there were a good group of people there but a good 5 that were off their rockers.
I've never heard of that list.

And neither has Google nor any other web search engine I tried...

At least not by that particular name...

No loss, at least with the description provided of what it was and ended up as... ;-)

I had no trouble finding it via a Google search. I also found metrics for the site. They got an impressive average of 3,400 hits a day. This was quite a popular discussion list, and a huge loss.

I wonder how many of those users will find there way here?

Funny you should ask.
I was a regular at MacStack and found this thread because I was trying to find out why the site went down. I checked whois and the ownership has not changed and is still valid.
I am quite sure there was nothing going down there that was cause such a hasty shut down, nothing as far as content is concerned.

For those not in the know MacStack was the last remainder of the community that MacAddict forums started. After MAF closed Clubhouse54 was where the diaspora moved till "DRAMA" and mackstack spun off and CH54 died out, leaving the Stack.
I miss the Stack, I knew some of the members there for over 20 years . One of the longest enduring online communities I am aware of.
A **** shame.

Discussion lists often end abruptly. One day someone decides that it isn't worth the money to keep things going anymore, or worth the time, or worth the energy, or all of the above.

You often have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. If there are multiple head cases harassing the list-mom via private e-mail, the list-mom could simply say to themselves "I don't need this aggravation" and it's over.

That said, I'm on over a half dozen Macintosh discussion lists that have been going strong for over 20 years. Each one has a different personality to it. So there is no lack of good Mac discussion lists.

MacStack was a forum, not email list, just like this place. Why do you keep referring to "lists"?

A forum is basically the same thing as an e-mail discussion list. Some folks call a forum a discussion board.

Some make a hard distinction between a list that is Web-based (a forum), and one that is e-mail based, but the distinction isn't cut and dried. Some folks on a forum such as this one only participate via e-mail, and some e-mail discussion lists have Web-based archives. How are they different?

Then factor in that many such fora originated as neither, they instead were dial-up communities.

Personally I don't care to be pedantic about it. You can call it whatever you like, and I'll call it whatever I like.

Awww yeah, I found one! So good to see you on here Pariah! It seems that nobody from OG MAF is already registered on this forum, but that may not be true. I hadn't gone to the stack in a while but was surprised I could not find it, and for whatever reason I decided to come here. What is the rest of the gang doing without Macstack, are they looking for a new place to feel at home or are they, meh? I figured a close knit group of members use a FB group to stay connected outside the forum, and I hope the reason the forum is down is not mired in some tragic story.

2021 M1Max 16" MacBook Pro with macOS 13.2
Howdy. I have been a Mac user since 1997 (I think) buying way back then a Quadra 650. My current Mac is a MacBook Pro with a M1 Max CPU.

I am likewise a refugee from MacStack.net <waves at Pariah>, that site having disappeared one night around mid-October. I had posted some stuff late one evening, then when I tried to bring up that site the next day I got nothing back. There were a few days near the start of November when someone put up a login page which looked nothing like any past version of MacStack, but apparently he didn't get any bites and took it down.

I am a bit worried about obvs who was MacStack's admin. I will note that he had a post on MacStack around Msrch where he complained about someone in a largish truck (so like a Ford F-150 or some similar model) which he noted had been cruisng for hours within the parking structure for his apartment building (I think in a Washington DC suburb on the Maryland side), so he took several pictures of that truck (having blotted out its license plate when he posted them). He got spotted by the driver or a passenger, so (as I recall his story) that truck cruised around the parking structure and came up behind him, whereupon someone inside the truck yelled at obvs asking what he was doing. obvs replied that he lived there and was waiting for a friend, so obvs turned that around and asked the yeller what HE was doing. The truck driver drove away without answering, apparently exiting the parking structure.

obvs had made a speculation that maybe the guys in the truck were catalytic converter thieves who maybe were moving around so no one could see who they were (and perhaps recognize that they were not residents), and left the story at that point.

I will note that a rather large multi-state catalytic converter ring was broken up by the FBI and state police agencies in August this year. Perhaps obvs played some role in that takedown, perhaps even provided testimony on the suspicious behavior for one operator in the DC area), BUT maybe obvs didn't hide his own tracks well enough so that he was a victim of some payback? I sincerely hope not.

On the other hand, obvs had gone to the expense of renting out some space on an Amazon Web Service server somewhere, so even if that theft ring had taken out his apartment with a firebomb, I assume that the backup would still be around. i could keep carrying out even more extreme possible horror tales, so let me stop here.

So good to see you, DEyncourt! Is your MBP the 14" model? Congrats on going M1 Max, that was my conclusion on how to proceed if and when I decide to go that route.

And thank you for the more comprehensive story on what has possibly been going on at Macstack, I also was wondering if obvs might have been affected in some way but that at least somebody close to him in communications would know for sure. I know there would be no simple reason for the site to go down like that, and without explanation. Amid the general circumstances of the last 3 years plus urban mental decline, I fear the worst.

Of course, keep us updated, and will this place be a new home for the stragglers? There really were a lot of people who would post on there on a daily basis, fully entrenched in being comfortable in their personalities like at a regular bar. I don't get that same vibe over here yet, but like was mentioned before, each "list" has its own vibe and personality.

Thanks, Toroidal.

My MBP is the 2021 16-inch model with the M1 Max, 64 GB RAM, a 2 TB SSD, and running macOS 13.0.1 Ventura (having started with Monterey).

I did not have any personal contacts with obvs (me being in the Los Angeles area) so I have no news about him beyond what I knew about him via MacStack. I do check in at MacStack.net at least once a day every day, so aside from someone setting up that completely wrong-looking login page for less than a week, there has been nothing new since disappearing.

There’s a bunch here from another place that went south. Every place is different, takes time to find the vibe. Check out the gather inn in off topic for a social get to know you thing.

Mac Mini M1 (8gb Memory / 500 gb Hard drive) Running Sonoma 14.0
Hi, just joined the forum, so a quick intro. Started in computers in the mid 1980s with a Commodore bought for my kids, and before giving them the computer, had to learn how to use it myself, moved on to other Commodore products, and some basic programming, before in the late 1990s buying my first IBM compatible. Soon I was building and installing my own computers, and a little tinkering, so not a total novice, but no expert. My current PC is not Windows 11 compatible due to the hardware, and in my retirement, due to owning both an iPhone and iPad, thought I would move to the Mac, so I have just bought a Mac Mini, and though not difficult to work out, there are some areas that I just can't get to grips with, especially as Venture seems to be different to some of the googled answers - hence joining this forum.

Welcome, @Jimmysb! Ventura changes some things, which means you will find things in the Internet that don't apply now. Also, your Mini, if new, has Apple's own chips, known as M1 and M2, and not the older Intel chips. That also makes some of the things on the web obsolete.

So, feel free to ask questions here, there are a lot of talented folks here who have a lot of experience and have seen/done it all.

Hi everyone. First used a Mac in 1994 when I bought a Performa 475 running OS 7.5 as my wife needed a Mac for her university course. I’ve owned some sort of Mac almost continuously since then but can’t claim to be any kind of expert!

Welcome to Mac-forums, and I'm sure you are enjoying the improvements of your later Mac models, and there seems to be a good number of members also from the UK.

I just noted that your name is the reverse of a good school buddy: B. Allan. Here's to your new membership.... :drink

Well, It's about time that I introduced myself. Retired Ex at&t IT employee after 43 years. Married, Kids, Grand kids. Love technology.
I've been on this forum for 2 months. I've been a Windows user since I retired my Commodore 64 in the early 90's. Over the years I've slowly migrated to Apple. My first "SMART PHONE" was a Iphone5 and I've moved through that line to my current 12 Pro Max. I had a Samsung Active 2 smart watch which I was completely happy with until I decided to upgrade to a Galaxy Watch 4 and found that it wasn't compatible with my 12 Pro Max. At that point I purchased a Apple Watch 7, which in my opinion is a far superior watch. Earlier this year I grabbed a 9th Gen Ipad. My current Windows PC was giving me the usual trouble I decided to look into a new computer. I had been hearing about the Apple Eco System concept and did some research including joining this forum as well as watching hours of YouTube videos on "Switching from Windows to Mac". During Black Friday days, I decided to take the step and get a Macbook Pro 14 M1 8gb 512gb computer. The first few days of converting over both physical machines as well as the mental changes of going from a Windows environment to a all Apple Eco Environment, I've come to appreciate the simplicity of the conversion process as well as the helpfulness of the members of this forum for helping me through those early days of learning.
Hopefully I can be as helpful to others as you all have been to me.

Thanks Again.

@TimothyFS, welcome to the forum. You sound like me about 12 years ago. Your shift is a bit more, as Apple has gone to the Apple Silicon (M1, M2) system-on-a-chip so the change is greater, but Apple does make it easy to transition. You've been at it a while, but I will suggest that the best way to make the transition is to learn the macOS way of things rather than trying to get macOS to look, act, or feel like Windows. That way lies madness....
