I went to see The Dark Knight this afternoon. Almost went last weekend, but decided to avoid the crowds. Now I must admit that I've long had high expectations of this movie. Batman Begins was pretty darned good despite a couple personal quibbles I had with it, and the more recent hype regarding Heath Ledger's performance as the Joker could only stoke my enthusiasm. I was already on a high with comic-book adaptations. I was very pleased with Iron Man and knew The Dark Knight would rock.
WELL! After The Dark Knight, I'm almost embarrassed to say I actually considered Iron Man to be my yardstick by which I could even compare the two. The Dark Knight took my expectations, chewed them up, spit them on the floor, ground them down into little pieces all the while yelling at me "That's ALL you expected from me you little punk??" Holy freaking transistors Batman! I don't believe I have ever seen a movie with this much action, extensive character development, and thought-provoking dialogue as The Dark Knight had. Looking back on it, while Iron Man was a good movie, in all honesty that script could have been written by any team of decent writers who knew enough about the comic book character and history. But the Dark Knight... Nah. No one else could have written this. I'm almost inclined to outright say this is the best movie I've ever seen, bar none. At the least, as the best comic book adaptation, Sin City might be the only other contender in my book.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go back and find the rest of the pieces of my mind that got blown out watching this.
