Sounds to me like they may be protecting themselves...
Or just putting expiration dates on to make you buy more in a timely manner.
I remember years ago, soft drinks and beer never had expiration dates on them till about ten years ago or so. They got the idea to make them expire in a few months so that you will keep buying more and not just let it sit there for months.
