It probably won't turn deadly, but it might lose it's effectiveness.

I imagine that it simply dries up after some (a long) time.

Or just putting expiration dates on to make you buy more in a timely manner.

I remember years ago, soft drinks and beer never had expiration dates on them till about ten years ago or so. They got the idea to make them expire in a few months so that you will keep buying more and not just let it sit there for months.

it may not go bad, but it may not age well, maybe the ingredients just feel or taste different and they don't want to be accountable for that.

I have one that must be 10 years old... still tastes good and works fine... didn't realise it expired, might stop using it!

What's wrong with buying more beer? ;) I personally don't need an expiration date to buy more.. lol..

As for Chapstick.. I've used stuf from the 90's that has worked fine, and I'm still alive... Or am I? Is this real? Who are you people? How'd I get here?! I want OUT!

Speaking of expiration dates, my roomate and I are having a disagreement. We've had peanut butter sitting out for about 3 weeks without a lid, I eat it, he doesnt. Which side of the fence do you fall?

haha, it still has the consistency of peanut butter. No staleness or excess of oil. That stuff has to be full of preservatives.

I go by smell. If it smelt like peanut butter I'd give it a taste, see if I vomited, then if not, make some toast.

Chapstick can also melt.

Be sure not to leave it in a car on a hot summer day. Last week my chapstick sort of half melted. You know when you lay a bottle on it's side, the liquid fills the bottom half, well that's what my chapstick now does, it fills only half of the tube!

chalk up another vote to toss that nasty petri dish bacterial experiment. it's not like peanut butter is expensive, and considering you two left a jar of peanut butter out for three weeks without a lid, who knows what else is going unattended, such as dishes and other cleaning... yikes!

Jiff peanut butter for the record. Up until yesterday I was prescribing to the sniff, test, wait for possible stomach upheaval, if not proceed to spread on Ritz. I tossed it yesterday just in case. Ironically our apartment is spotless, we just can't find the lid.
