So I have Windows 10 in a bootcamp setup, I used OSX's disk tool to restore the bootcamp partition to a external USB drive, what would be the proper way to restore bootcamp from the usb drive back to the Macbook? Do I just reverse the process? (Just in case I hose windows)

I'm not sure that's going to work. The best way to clone a Boot Camp partition is with third party software: WinClone. Before doing anything else, make sure you have a valid backup of macOS.

Sorry, I don't know of a free solution. And by the way, as far as I'm aware, Stellar Drive Clone does NOT backup or clone the Boot Camp partition. Once you start moving that Boot Camp partition from one drive to another, chances are you will lose all your Windows data and not be able to boot Windows. We have seen this scenario many times before. However, you're welcome to search for a free solution. One may exist.

Microsoft does not permit installation on an external drive as an anti-piracy measure so as chscag says you are a little at sea.

PS. No aspersions just Microsoft policy.

WinClone is free, or it used to be.

Did you check their website lately? Hasn't been free for several years since the original owners sold out.

No, I didn’t. Then it must not have been the app I used? I’ll have to look for it?

Edit: Found it, I used Clonezilla, Clonezilla - About.
