on Parallels you have the option of disabling shared folders and completely isolating the virtual pc from your mac

Don't enable shared folders - problem solved. ;)

I'm not sure what else you mean by isolate. A virtual machine, by design, is completely contained in a VM hard disk and the associated config files.

it doesnt give me the option of "enabling" or "disabling" shared folders thats the problem
by default it just has two folders sitting there Machine & Transient
..im using the program VirtualBox by the way

yes by theory i understand thats what it does but why then in Parallels (An alternative program to Virtualbox) does it let you manually choose whether you want to isolate the virtual pc with the host mac ?

Or select None - as the network card in the vm settings

it doesnt allow me to "select none" in the VirtualBox settings when i click on "settings>network" --

"enable network adapter" is clicked and greyed out

then on the bottom it says "cable connected" and thats clicked...

should i unclick "cable connecteD" ? i have a feeling you are talking about something completely different.

how do i "Select none as the network card in vm settings" using the VirtualBox program

Shared folders are only available to VMs that you've installed the guest additions for.

I've never used Parallels before - what do you mean by "isolate"? What does that functionality do?

I'm pretty sure he just doesn't want a guest OS to touch the host OS's folders. I'm not knowledgeable enough about VirtualBox to provide specific directions - but VMWare Fusion doesn't enable this functionality by default - I'm pretty sure VB is the same way.

You'd be correct - there are no folders that are shared by default. You also have to install the guest additions so if those aren't installed, it won't be an issue.

I've never seen "transient" folders listed before - that's a new one for me (I use Dropbox to keep my VMs in sync, not shared folders). Since I've never seen them, take a look here for more info on what transient folders are.

You can only change the network adaptor when the vm is off.

Disable the network card before starting the vm and that will give you the isolation you're after
