Am I missing somthing by using Cmd+shift+3 for the full screen and +4 to select a portion?

Am I missing somthing by using Cmd+shift+3 for the full screen and +4 to select a portion?

No you're not, except that Command Shift + 5 offers a small menu at the bottom of the screen which allows you to choose from the various screen shots you want. Both ways work well.
