I'm waiting for the public beta to be released. How about you Sly, are you going to test it?

I've got a real fast Samsung T5 USB-C SSD that I'm going to use to test Catalina. I'm anxious to know how some of my apps are going to run with it.

I'll be jumping on that grenade as soon as it's released. I almost payed the developer fee but decided that was ridiculous.

I haven't decided whether I will run it on partition on my boot drive or put it on a USB drive. I almost bought a SSD recently for things like that but I don't really have an enclosure fast enough to really make use of the speed.

I beta tested Mojave on a USB 3 connected HDD and although a bit slower it booted okay. Obviously an SSD would have been better but not essential to test the new features.

For the last few years I've run the betas in either one of two ways:
1. On my main (boot) drive (with a clone of the previous OS on a secondary external drive of course).
2, With the beta on an external drive as you do. As you say it doesn't give you a true picture of speed but does allow testing the features.

Apple should be announcing the public beta sometime next week. I'm going to do testing using my Samsung T5 SSD which connects via USB-C. Should be fast enough although I'm not concerned with speed as much as I am with compatibility of several apps that I use.
