Safari and redirects

Hello,

For a number of days (5) Safari has been redirecting me to a fake/bogus mac support page. I have tried to clean/kill this virus/trojan horse with the Premier version of Malwarebytes but it has done nothing. Even tried re-installing Catalina. Nothing seems to kill this redirect problem. Switch to Firefox with no problem uncounted. Leads me to believe Safari is the culprit. Any help is appreciated. Nothing online (solution) has proven to work.

So far this has not happened to many mac users, i would check and clear cookies, and everything else in Safari
everyone will recommend a cleaning program, i think the problem is an embedded hidden library file.
try searching that fake-bogus mac support page on line if you have not already.

Hi and welcome.

There are measures you can take. Yes, it's linked to Safari.

Open Safari > Safari Preferences (shortcut is Command plus comma) > Advanced > Check "Show Develop menu in menu bar".

Then with Safari open, click on Develop in the top menu bar. Choose "Empty Caches".

If that doesn't work, then > Safari Preferences > Privacy > Manage Website Data. Let it populate. You may then have to Remove all website data to get rid of this malware.

I agree with Ian's suggestion, but you should be aware that when you "Empty Caches" in Safari you also remove all your Favicons for your bookmarks. Not a big deal by any means but some folks get quite upset when that occurs especially if they don't know it will happen.

I know I harp on this but this is why I do not use Safari as my default or primary browser. Despite the fact that I use the Safari AdGuard extension with all filters on Safari is still an intrinsic part of the OS and consequently more difficult to fix unlike third part browsers which allow you to easily delete history, cookies, bookmarks, passwords etc or in the worst case just uninstall the whole browser. I have done that a few times with Firefox in the past.
If I'm going to surf in unknown waters I don't use my best board.
I only use Safari for trusted sites and as a repository for all those bookmarks that I may want to restore to a different browser.
Additional;. Charlie, don't the favicons come back when you revisit the sites?

Yes they do. But of course that means you will have to visit every site you bookmarked. A pain.

@ Rod, I like pinned tabs in Safari, they have only the favicon, and not the site name.

Oh yeah, so they do, I hadn't noticed. I really only use Safari for toolbar favourites so hadn't noticed.
