I can't seem to find the tick-box to delete the oldest data to automatically make room for the new on my brand new iMac (Catalina).

Previously I have been able to do this on my MBPro and Mini mac machines by ticking a box.

The Glyph has successfully restored everything (yesterday) but now doesn't want to play any more.

Hi davowolf,

Forgive me if I've got this wrong, but from a previous thread you started, I seem to recall that you upgraded from macOS Mojave to macOS Catalina and used your Time Machine backup on the Glyph to restore your data, settings etc??

If that is the case, then I would strongly recommend that you erase and reformat the Glyph - Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) - rather than trying BU from Catalina on top of the Mojave BU.

In my view, anyway, it's far better to start a new TM backup from a new Operating System on a fresh External Hard Drive (EHD). You have the choice of keeping the Mojave BU and using another EHD or, if not possible, erasing/reformatting the Glyph and starting anew.

Your concern understood Ian and thanks for the input.

With my brand new iMac restored I suppose it makes sense to reformat the Glyph. I haven't done this before believing that it was doing a 'FIFO' process. And so not sure how to do that.

I thought the system therefore automatically made room for new stuff when the external is full in this 'FIFO' way. That was my main concern in posting.

Here are the messages I'm getting.

And yes I did have Mojave on my 2014 Mac mini which died, replaced only in December 2019 with a 2018 MM which came with Catalina.

Just for completeness, this replacement 2018 MM is currently sick and on the Apple bench awaiting repair or a buyback. My iMac is one day old.

So the Glyph has been friends with all three, together with my MBPro of three years ago.

Hope that clears up the relevant history.

Thank you for your prompt and courteous reply. The message is straightforward, in the sense that the Glyph is full:)

I believe the reason Time Machine doesn't make room for the new BU is that the Operating Systems are completely different. Could be wrong, but what is clear is that the Glyph won't take any more - for whatever reason.

Reformatting is straightforward. This Link takes you step-by-step through the process with pictures: Format an External Hard Drive or USB Flash Drive for Mac OS X

And, as in the article, you want Mac OS X Extended (Journaled). This is required for all TM backups irrespective of the OS or the file system. It may change in the future, who knows:)

I didn't see your post #4 when I posted above, but I don't think that changes anything.

OK I've followed the instructions in your link and it seems to have worked - ie Glyph now clean.

Screenshot 2020-01-17 12.40.07.png

So do I just let the TM do its thing automatically ? Will it FIFO without me asking it to ?

Subsequent screens I'm now getting make me think there's something else needed to get the, now clean Glyph, to make friends with my iMac.

Disconnected and reconnected Glyph. They can see each other but not yet friends. What next to get backing up started ? Noticed change in icon which looks like a stock

In Disk Utility, select the "View" option, and make sure the "Show all devices" option is enabled. Then you want to select the top most disk/container/partition on the Glyph backup drive, and erase that.

Sorry for the delay - having lunch:)

With the Glyph attached and mounted, please open Disk Utility (DU) again. As you look at post #7, click on "View" top left and select "Show all devices".

This should then show an indent below "Glyph 1TB". Look at my screenshot below. It gives the name of the make "LaCie Rugged" and underneath is the Indent which I've named "Spare".

You should see something similar. Assuming you do, When you click on Glyph, it should show a window like mine. In particular note "Partition Map" and adjacent to it "GUID Partition Map". That is important.

Screenshot 2020-01-17 at 2.19.30 pm?.png

Now click on the Indent. Then Click on Erase - give it a name, say, "TM Backup". Choose Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and erase.

With luck this will create an icon on your Desktop named TM Backup. The icon you showed above (yellow) is OK.

If you've got this far, Open System Preferences > Time Machine and add that EHD named TM Backup. Let's try a BU again.

If I've not been clear on anything, don't be bashful, tell me. I'll do my best.

Just seen Bob's post. Yes, you can erase the top most to start with remembering the GUID partition. Then, I'd do the same for the indent as outlined in my post. That way, all options are covered and you have an EHD with a meaningful name "TM Backup".

You may need to restart your iMac, to get the procedure to recognize, the erased drive, if you haven't done this already.

This mornings pictures after an on/off.

Compare with Yesterday at 2.24pm

So puzzled. Some backing up appears to be happening; a new icon reecognised; but message about application required.

Looks like the Glyph and my new iMC have made friends after all - without much intervention from me !

The "inProgress" message about needing an application is caused by the fact that TM labels the backup that is underway with the "inProgress" label temporarily, then changes it once the backup is complete. But an inProgress file is not readable because TM is still writing the chains of links to it (normally), and there is no other app that is affiliated with that extent. On the first backup, there are no link chains to update, but the name is still given as "inProgress."

Hope that helps understand what was going on.

Thanks again Ian for your interest in my little problem and for the s/w insight Jake, which despite having done 'some' IT studies, wouldn't have come up with your explanation.
