We need a new mouse after our once faithful bluetooth Logitec M555b ratted on us and went toes up!

I got a Logitec Pebble M350 bluetooth/wireless mouse that arrived today, but when I tried to set it up with the downloaded driver it told me that it isn't optimised for my system. It is supposed to work on anything later than OS X 10.10 and we are running 10.13.6. All be it on a late 2009 iMac. We have a Mk1 Magic Mouse on it and I like using it left handed when I am doing any photo editing, but SWMBO like her meeces with proper clicky bits on them and not a nice glass top.

So my question is does anyone know of a mouse that will work bluetooth, not wifi, on our system please? Preferably one that doesn't need a mortgage to buy :*:* Not too many buttons either please or we would both get confused :Blushing::Blushing:

You really shouldn't need a specific driver for basic mouse functionality. Simply pairing the mouse should be all you need to do. The driver typically is just to customize what the buttons do, adjust mouse sensitivity, etc, in ways beyond what the basic system preferences do. I have a Logitech mouse and I don't even have their software installed, although I do use a 3rd party utility called SteerMouse that gives me more flexibility in how I can configure my buttons.

Actually, I see the problem now. According to Logitech's product page, that mouse requires Bluetooth LE (Low Energy), which is part of the BT 4.0 spec. Your 2009 iMac doesn't meet that requirement. According to EveryMac, your BT version is 2.1. If you have a free USB port, consider using a Unifying Receiver with it and call it a day.

That would be the problem LABeach. My better 1/2 does not like the idea of wifi and it is persona non gratis in our house unless absolutely necessary. My lamantations are beaten down by Mercola, a 'doctor'.

Please don't describe bluetooth:[ That is an accepted connection method at the moment.

But, I did manage to get it connected by the wifi dongle for a short time just to ensure it wasn't a duff budgie and it worked OK, but there was no way of stopping the cursor from flying across the screen with the slightest move of th emouse. That's when I download the driver and then nothing worked with that mouse?

So now I suppose that I must look for an older unit that will work on what ever BT 2.1 is?

Thank you for your efforts. They are appreciated.

Well the unifying receiver doesn't use wi-fi. It does use 2.4 Ghz band radio communication, but it's not connected to a router nor to the internet in any way, shape, or form.

I've given up on recommending Bluetooth mice. They are too expensive and often too flaky. Your wife should learn to love RF mice, which is what I recommend.

This is my favorite mouse. It's wireless, so inexpensive it is practically disposable, dead reliable, comfortable to use, and it will go for an entire year on one cheap AA battery:

I second Randy's suggestion. I'm currently using the Staples version of that mouse and it works great. You do have to give up a USB port connection but if you have one of the original Apple wired keyboards that supplies two additional USB 2 ports, that should be no problem. By the way, the Apple keyboard USB ports are only good for mice and printers, not for charging devices.

Yes we'll the loss of a USB port for the RF receiver may not be much of an issue on a desktop device and my wife still has one of the older cable connected keyboards mentioned, so no issue for her given that she needs a dock to connect it to her instu MBP but for me and others using a recent model MBP or MBA a Bluetooth mouse is really the only practical solution.

This one has been pretty good.

Another vote for the Logitech MX-310. I have 2 of them here and I chose the blue one as that is my favorite color. Both work GREAT on all my macs including a 2010 27" iMac with High Sierra.

The nice thing about using Logitech's keyboard and mice with their Unifying Receiver is that the Mac sees them as a wired device. I ran into an issue when I enabled Firevault on my wife's Mac mini when I couldn't log in afterwards on reboots because it wouldn't connect to a 3rd party bluetooth keyboard until after you were logged in.

I'd rather get an inexpensive portable hub such as this one, which will even allow you to work and charge your laptop at the same time, and use it with a RF mouse, rather than have to deal with a Bluetooth mouse:

Anker USB C Hub Adapter, 7-in-1 USB C Adapter, with 4K HDMI, Power Delivery, USB C Data Port, microSD and SD Card Reader, 2 USB 3.0 Ports
$40

Chances are that you will need this hub for other purposes anyway, such as connecting USB 3/USB 2 devices to your laptop.

Yes well I'm still on a 2015 13" MBP so slightly different for me but yes my wife has a hub on her 2018 MBPr 13". Pretty hard to do without with 3 X USBC. (One for power)

Well, after all of that lot I settled for a Logitech M185 basically because I didn't really want to spend much on a mouse. It was working well for 3 weeks and then it started to play up by just not operating. I changed the battery just in case the original was a duffer. No difference. I tried the 'dongle' in the USB slot in the USB Mac keyboard but no difference. I had totally forgotten about the keyboard USB slot.

So now I have ordered a Logitech M310. Talk about cheek! The price of the M310 here is £30 all but a penny! That's about 3 times the cost the other side of the Pond!

Why can't life be simple for once?
