How do I teach my new Magic Trackpad the difference between a left click and a right click please?

Do I need to click on the appropriate side of the pad?

Hi Nighthawk4

When my wife got her new MacBook Pro, the Trackpad was, by default, set up so that a one-finger click = Left and a two-finger click = Right

So try that first. Then you can explore all sorts of other possibilities. Go into System Preferences > Trackpad.

From there, starting with Point and Click, you can set up the Trackpad in the way the best suits your needs. For each setting there is a short loop-video showing you how it would look/work.

Our Admin, chscag, beat me to it and included an excellent Link too. I must try to type faster - brain to arm latency is too long:)
