I just purchased this player to use on my Mac. It also comes with a USB C adapter. This so far have been working great. Maybe some of you folks who are interested in one, I would recommend this at $30 from Amazon and free ship. Just thought I'd put this out, I know there are a bunch after reading and using I thought I'd mention it. Hope it helps someone.

Looks like a nice external CD/DVD drive, especially for the price - I'm still using my Apple SuperDrive from 2013 infrequently, but that cost me about 80 bucks back then. Posts occasionally appear from Apple owners w/ malfunctioning internal CD drives on older computers, so an inexpensive 'work around'. Dave :)

Hey Dave, yea I figured it might help a potential buyer looking to add a drive whether it a Mac or apple laptop. I just save all my photo's from my iPhone as an extra backup to a dvd yesterday and it worked great again. I also have it backed on iCloud too. Anyway have a great day.

I have a cheap $20 LG external dvd drive, and I cant seem to get it to boot a live linux dvd... but the dvd boots fine on my 2007 imac with internal apple superdrive.

is it normal to not be able to boot from a non apple external dvd player?

I have never had an issue with an 3rd party external DVD drive used with my Mac, but I haven't used a non Apple one in 10 years or more.

Which Mac do you have the LG attached to? If the Mac already has a built in optical drive, then no, it won't boot from the external because it looks first at the internal drive. In that case, you can try holding down the Option Key as soon as you hear the boot chime and see if it allows you to select the external LG drive.

tried it on the 2007 imac, no luck. on the 2015 imac also not booting. tried booting a snow lep dvd on the 2015 imac, looked like it was going to work then I got the gray screen and kernel panics. lol

I thought perhaps apple has something in place that won't allow the mac to boot from non apple drives?

I need to see if I can boot a CD from my 2017 iMac with my LG drive. I don't have a live CD on hand to try it with though. I do have a bootable Windows DVD that I could try but I really don't want to mess with my working iMac in case something goes wrong.

Why are you attempting to start up a 2015 iMac from a 2011 Snow Leopard DVD?

Yeah, that's not going to work. At least not as a boot disc.

The mid-2011 iMacs are the last models that can run SL 10.6 and they need a 10.6.7 version as a minimum.

May I ask you the procedure that you took to get your photos from phone/MacBook on to a dvd/cd disc.
I have a similar external drive to you.
Sorry to butt in.
David.

The procedure I used to place photos from my iPhone or Mac was to simply use an application that is able to burn them to a CD or DVD. Sounds oversimplified but actually it's very easy to do. Just transfer all your photos from your phone to your Mac using the Photos app or Image Capture App and then burn them to a disc.
