Does the magic mouse have the same capacity as a Mac mouse rolling ball?

I love my Mac mouse with the little ball but it's showing its age and often not working right. I need a new mouse.

I love the little ball in the mouse. It's super useful going sideways when editing film or audio. Does the magic mouse have the same capability? I see it has no ball on it, but perhaps its got that function by simply touching it.

What exactly do you mean by does it have the same capacity? It can be used for video editing if that’s what you mean. You may decide to adjust the tracking speed but that’s easily done in the mouse preference pane.

Wow!!! If it really is a Mac Mouse with a rolling ball on the bottom, and it's not working properly, it probably needs cleaning which can be done with a clean cloth, some Isopropyl alcohol and maybe a Q-Tip to clean the little wheels.

PS: I haven't heard of anyone using such a ball-mouse for over twenty years if it really is such a mouse.

And the ball is released by untwisting the plastic ring on the bottom surrounding the mouse ball.

PPS: Even any cheap USB laser mouse will work much better and smoother that that mouse ever could, and better with a good quality mousepad.


EDIT: And I would even suggest buying a new USB laser mouse, even wireless, but definitely at least two button mouse with scroll wheel. Steve Jobs didn't like either feature to be included in an Apple mouse but the Apple Engineers/ designers got it past him.

The old mice use the ball movement to track the cursor. The new mice use significantly better technology to do the tracking and works just as you would imagine.

I'm an idiot. I meant the ball on top. It's a Mighty Mouse. Basically, I want something like my Mighty Mouse and I'm thinking I might just get a refurbished one.

I guess I did wonder about those for a bit, but really, I didn't think anybody would still be using one of those Mice in this day and age.

Anyway, to clean the little ball on the top of those mice, pour a fair bit of 99% Isopropyl Alchol over a sheet of clean paper and/or maybe a clean cotton handkerchief and turn the mouse upside down so that the small ball is on the bottom, and quite vigoursly move the mouse around and back-and-forth and do some circular motions on the wet area. Then do the same over a dry area.

You may have to do it two or three times to get it back to its original smooth state, but that method always worked for me.

But personally I don't have much, or anything good to say about those Apple mice either.

If you like that type of mouse and lare looking for something newer and better, both Logitech and I believe Kensington still make(s) various ball controlled mice, and there may be others.

Try googling. Most all mice are Mac compatible, and some have special Mac software for extra modifications and features.

I have seen nothing really exactly like the Mighty Mouse but the new Magic Mouse works in a similar manner with 360 Degree scrolling but you use your finger on the top surface like you would on the apple track pad.

I had a few MM's and gave up on them. That cleaning works sometimes for a while but eventually no longer works.

I gotta admit, I've always found the Mighty Mouse perfect for my needs. The ball helps me go left and right. I tried a tracking ball mouse and HATED it. I want to smooth rest my hand on the mouse. I'll look into the Logitech, although a replacement Mighty Mouse is a bunch cheaper, and I'm not sure I'll get much more functionally out of the Logitech.

But just like your socks and underwear, you wash and clean them when they get dirty, and then repeat.

Just don't put a dirty mouse through a washing machine cycle. :Blushing:

Don't forget that the Staples Stores often have the Logitech and other ball mice on sale andf they are returnable if you don't like them. At least that's how they work in Canada.

PS: They also have their own extended warranty that cost's about $4.00. Over-the-counter replacement exchange.

PPS: Some, NOT ME!!!, also like and use a seperate Track Pad you might want to consider. But Apple's price for their model may give you a heart attack unless they may sell refurbished units.

But like Socks and Underwear the MM wears out. I had gone through 5 of them and eventually nothing would work. I do like that ball for the Magic Mouse with your finger will do the same basic 360 Degree Scrolling and never wears out, at least not yet and I have 2 of them for years now. Grin

With a couple of Mighty Mice I took them apart and cleaned the magnetic Stems. Putting those back in was a pain but the MM worked for 5 months before it got bad again. Not the the faint hearted though trying to get it back together! Grin
