I use an Apple bluetooth wireless Magic Mouse 2 on an iMac Sierra. Is there a way to check the battery status of the mouse before it just runs dead? Or better yet, is there a way for the mouse to alert me with a desktop popup that the battery is low, the way the iPod does?

Oops. I just found the Bluetooth icon at the top right of the desktop screen. There I can see the battery level at "Open Mouse Preferences." Apparently, it is not possible to program a popup.

Anyway, my question is answered. I apologize for not seeing that icon before posting. I don't know how to delete this post.

I always get a Notification with my Apple Mouse. Look in System Preferences > Mouse, > Bluetooth, or > Notifications.

ferrar, At System Preferences>Mouse, there are two screens: On the first screen is Point and Click which offers configuration of Scroll Direction, Secondary Click, Smart Zoom, and Tracking Speed. There also appears Mouse Battery Level, and a link to Set Up. At none of those does "Notifications" or anything like it appear. The second screen is More Gestures, which includes Swipe Between Pages, Swipe Between Apps, and Mission Control. Again, nothing about "Notifications." There is nothing about Notifications at System Preferences>Bluetooth either.

I have Sierra 10.12.6 on my iMac. Perhaps different OS versions offer different configuration options. But at least I can check the battery level from time to time, and recharge before the mouse just drops dead.

Thanks for your input.

What about if you click on the Bluetooth icon, in the top menu bar? Then hover on the “Mouse”, this shows me the battery level.

I am using Mojave, and have an Apple Magic Mouse 1.

I also looked in my System Preferences, and didn’t see that option in any of those locations either. But, I get a notification, when the battery level gets below 20% for both my mouse and keyboard.

I have a MM2 and running Mojave, you click on the BT icon on the top bar and hover over the mouse entry and it shows the battery level.

I have an iHome mouse attached to one of my USB ports on my iMac and don't have to worry about the battery status of the Apple "miserable mouse". LOL

I now have 3 magic rodents sitting in their original boxes. Sorry, I just can't use the things and I'm beginning to hate my magic keyboard also. :(

You know, choosing a mouse is a very personal decision. My wife likes small mice, to fit her small hands, and hates to part with one. She has a wired Apple mouse and will keep it until it dies, and even then, ask me to "fix" it for her. I, on the other hand, love my MM2 and any other mouse just feels "wrong" to me. I have tried others but within a day have gone back to my trusty MM. But I do know it's not for everybody, and I even know why, in some cases. When we travel I usually don't take the MM and just use the trackpad, but I do miss the mouse.

Hmmm...??? I often wondered what the "MM" abbreviation stood for but I didn't think you would be copying some of my curmudgeon type comments Charlie. :Smirk:

PS: I had to google who and what "iHome" was all about.

PPS: I'll stick to using my Logitech M705 wireless mouse thanks, and yes their batteries do last about three± years.

And yes I keep an old wired Apple and Logitech mouse in the back of my desk drawer, just in case. ;D

Thanks to all.

Your posts prompted me to look deeper. At System Preferences>Bluetooth, what's displayed is "Magic Keyboard". The mouse is not shown. I have an Apple keyboard that connects by USB cable. It is not Bluetooth. When I unplug that cable, the keyboard stops working, but at System Preferences>Bluetooth, "Magic Keyboard" continues to display even if I close the display and reopen it. That suggests to me that my iMac thinks my MM2 is a Keyboard.

At About This Mac>System Report...>Hardware>Bluetooth>Devices, Magic Keyboard is listed, Magic Mouse 2 is not. However, among the listed characteristics of "Magic Keyboard" are Minor Type: Mouse, Services: Magic Mouse 2. That sounds like Magic Mouse 2 is a sub-division of Magic Keyboard, at least on this iMac.

ferrarr wrote "“The only way to know definitively, would be to let the batteries run out all the way, or down to 4%.”
What has happened to me (twice, which generated this post) is the mouse simply goes dead, and no notification. Now that I know I can check battery level regularly, and thus avoid a surprise mouse death, I am okay, although a pop-up warning would be nice.

Pm-r wrote "I'll stick to using my Logitech M705 wireless mouse". In my MS-DOS & Windows days, I used Logitech mice, and loved them, so I am inclined to follow your lead. At Amazon, a reviewer wrote "it seems there's two variations of the M705 model: The one with the Logitech logo and the smaller 'Logitech' name beneath it, and the one offered by Amazon with just the larger 'Logitech' lettering." The reviewer goes on to say that the M705 offered by Amazon is not as good as "the other M705". There are other reviewers at Amazon who seem to agree. Does this make any sense to you?

Have you tried deleting the Magic Keyboard from the Bluetooth panel and re-pairing with the MM2? That may or may not make a change, but it's worth trying, IMHO. It's been a long time since I last saw Sierra, so I don't remember if I had the MM2 back then.

"can you provide the model year of your iMac?"
iMac Retina 5K, 27 inch, 2017

"I believe the keyboard is a Magic Keyboard, and the cable can be disconnected from the keyboard also."
Your question reminded me: This iMac came with a Bluetooth keyboard (a Magic Keyboard?) as well as the Magic Mouse 2. That is undoubtedly the keyboard that appears at About This Mac>System Report...>Hardware>Bluetooth>Devices. I suppose it shows up even though I am not using it because apparently, in some sense, the Magic Mouse 2, which I am using, is "technically" part of or an aspect of the Magic Keyboard. I used the original keyboard only a day or so. For me, it is too small, and I missed the numbers pad at the right, which I use regularly. I purchased an Apple USB-connected keyboard that is laid out more comfortably (for me) and has a numbers pad. It is not Bluetooth. It has no switch on it.

On the chance that, if I were using the Magic Keyboard, the mouse's battery level notification function would appear, I put the Magic Keyboard into use, but I found nothing about "notifications" except at System Preferences>Keyboard>Shortcuts>Mission Control, there is an option Notifications Center, but following that lead, there seems to be nothing about battery level warnings.

So, again, I conclude that Magic Mouse 2 battery level pop-ups are out, which is okay. I will simply check the level regularly.

Maybe have a read through these:
iMac Sierra Magic Mouse 2 Notifications low battery level warning pop-up warning
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7971981

With the Magic mouse 2 you will get a warning when it is down to about 5%.

pm-r: "there will be a low battery icon next to the menu Bluetooth icon when a Bluetooth device has a low battery level".
Okay. I will be alert to that. It is of course possible (likely) that the low battery icon did appear there, and I just missed it.
Thank you again for your help.

Well, I have to admit that I had never noticed the difference of the logos on the various Logitech Marathon Mouse M705 mice that I have been using since early 2012. Neither have I noticed any difference in the quality but the earliest models (I don't know what logo they used), did have a tendency for the left micro switch to go a bit goofy with double/ triple clicking problem.

But no problem as they were covered by warranty, but later models I bought from Staples and paid for their cheap replacement warranty coverage that allows across the counter replacement. I haven't had to do that for years now but also purchased two as it seemed like Logitech was wanting to drop manufacturing that model at that time. I'm still using one of them to this day. I've had a total of 4 since 2012 and still have two or maybe three.

BTW: The later models I bought from Staples Canada were also on sale for about $30.00cdn they just had the Logitech name, no logo as shown below. They were also sold as new, not refurbished, as some tend to do.

PS: They also have what I would call a hidden Mouse button which I have used for a designated use using their system preference pane software.
