I am in the process of replacing my 2013 MacBook Pro with another one. I have no choice but to get one with one or more USB-C ports and I have lots of peripherals which don't connect to USB-C. A classic scenario I expect.

Yesterday I spent ages on-line trying to make sense of the market for USB-C adapters/cables. I will be getting a MBPro with touch bar (more for the performance than the touch bar!) so I have a choice as to whether to get separate adapters or a hub. The main things are to convert to USB3, thunderbolt2 & an SD card reader but having one for occasional use with HDMI.

The Apple converters are expensive and their USB and multi converters don't get great reviews anyway. I may get the Thunderbolt cable for use with my phone. My main aim is something that works and is reasonably reliable. Paying more doesn't seem to be a guarantee of either!! I will be using them mostly at home but best if they are reasonably portable.

Any recommendations/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I was doing the same thing for the same reason. I looked up this on google (USB Speed and Power Comparison Chart) to understand the differences.
I purchase a docking station (HyperDrive USB C Hub, Best Type-C DUO Adapter 50Gbps MacBook Pro 2018 2017 2016 13" 15", 7in2: USB-C 100W Power Delivery, USBC 5Gbps Data, 4K HDMI, microSD/SD Card Reader, 2xUSB 3.1 Ports SANHO) from Amazon along with (Jokitech Aluminum USB 3.1 Gen2 Type C Superspeed Mini Converter Adapter with Anti Dust Cap Protection for Type C Enabled Laptop Computers MacBook 12’ Pro 13’/15’, ASUS ZenBook 3/ VivoBook.etc.Grey) Adapter also from Amazon.

Thanks. I can't find the Jokitech - I guess you are looking at the US Amazon.

Yes, sorry I didn't notice that you're in the UK.
They are on Amazon (USA) I did a search on Amazon for the USB- 3.1 GEN 2 (that is the 10 Gb) adapters. I liked the dust cap that comes with them.

Thanks for the advice Kenney but in the end I decided to keep it simple and not get a complicated device with stuff I don't need. So I have bought a dedicated HDMI Adapter (Lenova), a dedicated SD card reader (Ugreen) and a few Amazon basics USB Type-C to USB 3.1 Female adapters - all from Amazon(UK). Now, if any of them fail, I don't need to replace a complicated and expensive device but just deal with them individually and more cheaply. Hopefully the USB adapter will mean I can use it with my existing phone cable (lightning not thunderbolt!!) so I won't need to buy that.

The only thing that's undecided is whether I need a USB-C to Thunderbolt cable but that will have to wait as the only one I can see is the very expensive Apple one and I am not sure whether I will need it.
