I'm looking for a reliable external hard drive for my MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017). Has anyone found one that works.. The user ratings on the drives sold at the Apple store are not great. I want to use it for Time Machine and to get it before upgrading to Mojave. Suggestions will be appreciated.

B&H Photo in New York is selling the Samsung T5 external SSDs at a discount. The 500GB is $117.99 and the 1TB $197.99. The T5 takes a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C input. You have both on your 2017 MBP.

I have the Samsung T5 and use it for CCC backup. I could use it for Time Machine but Carbon Copy Cloner is faster.

I have a 1T Seagate ultra slim portable which has never let me down. About £40, 2T £60. Lots of colours so you don't lose it.
