Thunderbolt Display problems

Hello everyone,

First post here so please be nice

Having a slight issue with my Thunderbolt display.

I've tried resetting everything i've found online but no luck.

Tried it with a thunderbolt cable & getting the same result, so it's not the built in cable.


Upon plugging it in, both my MacBook pro's screen & the thunderbolt screen flicker on and off repeatedly until i unplug it.

As if the displays connecting and disconnecting.


Has any one come across this before?

I'm more than happy to open up the screen and investigate, but a point in the right direction as to what i'm looking for to test would be appreciated

The display is an Apple LED Cinema Display 27"

The one with just the magsafe & thunderbolt.

I can't get any more info from it currently.

It does it attached to any MacBook Pro, Mac Pro or Mac Mini that i've plugged into it.

I would start with an SMC reset, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295. You may want to do it twice.

The MacBooks connects fine to other displays.....

So, the display does NOT work with any Mac you have connected it to, AND the MBP DOES work, with other monitors you have connected to it? If so, it sounds like the monitor is dead to me?

My MacBook Pro is fine, as is the Mac mini & the Mac Pro that I’ve tried testing said screen with.

All above mentioned units work with other screens with no issue.

The issue is the screen.

I’ve tried the factory fitted thunder bolt cable, and a thunderbolt cable connected to the thunderbolt port on the screen with the same flicker results.

When the flicker happens it makes the Macintosh in useable.

When the initial fault appeared it was purely from moving the angle of the display.

What I’m trying to determine is whether it’s a potential PSU fault or logic board fault. Or as simple as a nicked wire. (Due to the movement causing it)

As previously said, I am more than happy and equipped to open up the display and have a look at what’s going on, along with component level repair. I was merely asking for a point in direction as to what to look for, or if there was any common reason for this outcome.

Flicker on those Apple TB displays can be caused by either bad cabling or the connection itself. And yes, it could be something internal. If you're okay with opening up the TB display and checking it out, you can find the instructions at iFixit: The Free Repair Manual. I would try new cables first and check the connector on the back of the display.
