Hi, Been looking for a Printer that uses Black Ink only without joy to use on my iMac 2017 but all I could find was a Laser Jet Printer that uses Black Ink only. My question is do any of you Guy’s own a Laser Jet Printer & if so how do you rate them compared to the Deskjet Printers that use Ink Cartridges. ( The Printer that I have been looking at is :- HP LaserJet Pro M15W Mono Laser Printer ) any info would be appreciated. John S.

I've owned a number of printers, both ink and laser and while the ink jets do a decent job printing, the quality of the laser printer is significantly better. From a cost perspective, you will find that the replacement ink jet cateridge is not significantly cheaper the laserjet toners. From a cost of a printer perspective, a black-only laser jet printer is fairly affordable and a better option.

You want to find a printer that is accessible through WiFi and if it has AirPrint that is even better since then you can print from iOS based devices.

I currently have a small-office sized Canon laser printer that prints B&W and color. Depending on your usage you will find that laser printers print more papers before needing replacements than inkjet printers.

I think you've misread the specs as all B&W laser printers use black toner for their "ink" as you call it.

B&W Laser printers are usually (maybe always) much cheaper to use with their less expensive consumables. But one can buy cheap third party ink cartridges to come close.

That printer you're considering is a nice basic, non-Duplexing (2-sided Printing) printer Mac wireless capable, but I have no idea how they do "scan with your smartphone camera" as the specs say:
https://www.staples.ca/en/hp-laserjet-pro-m15w-printer-w2g51a-bgj/product_24323034_1-CA_1_20001

For duplex printing, one can just turn the paper over and print the odd pages. A bit fiddly to get right sometimes.

EDIT:
I just noticed our local Staples has the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28w All-in-One Printer (W2G55A#BGJ) on sale at the same price that also does scanning.
https://www.staples.ca/en/hp-laserj...inter-w2g55a-bgj/product_2897525_1-CA_1_20001

Just thought I'd mention it… :Smirk:

There are scanning apps such as Scanner Pro for smartphones that basically make use of the phone's camera to take a picture of a document. Given that and the printer's AirPrint capabilities basic scanning is taken care of. There are even numerous ready made or DIY tools to help you get the phone in a good position consistently.

What you are looking for is a black and white laser printer. The brand that I recommend is Brother, as they tend to be really good with their Macintosh support, quality, longevity, cost of available consumables, and features at a hyper-competitive price. (I DO NOT recommend HP printers. Not because their printers are bad, but because their Macintosh support can be really terrible.)

Just about any Brother model you choose will be good, however I usually recommend a model that can take a toner cartridge good for, at minimum, 3,000 pages. Otherwise you end up replacing consumables too often, which can get pricey. (However, if your printing needs are light, one of Brother's cheapest laser printers might be a good choice for you.)

I most often recommend this model which users have unanimously raved about:

Brother HL-L5100DN
$140 with free shipping (DO NOT go for the optional consumables plan...it's not a good deal)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01BBL2TRS/?tag=macforums0e4-20

When the time comes, you can get a high quality replacement toner cartridge, that is good for *8,000* pages, for only $26 from:
https://www.carrotink.com/tn850-black-toner-cartridge.html

If the HL-L5100DN doesn't have all the features you are looking for, let me know and I can recommend a model that does.

It appears the Brother HL-L5100DN is not wireless. Brother does have a nice line of wireless laser printers that likewise can print to both sides (duplex). If you do choose a Brother and need wireless look for a "W" at the end of the model number. Staples had a sale not too long ago for the wireless model of that printer.

If the original poster needs his printer to offer a wireless connection, for a few bucks more than the HL-L5100DN there is:

Brother HL-L6200DW
$175 plus free shipping
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01824JTWK/?tag=macforums0e4-20

However, if what he really wants is a printer that has very similar specs to the HP LaserJet Pro M15W that he mentioned, there is:

Brother HL-L2350DW
$89 plus free shipping
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0763WDSYZ/?tag=macforums0e4-20

which is a printer that has somewhat better specs than the HP, for a bit less money, from a better company. This class of printer is good for someone using it at home for light printing. The Brother 5000-series printers are inexpensive business workhorses.

Plus a standard Brother 1200 page cartridge vs the HP's standard 500 page one I believe.

The model that Randy mentioned above (HL-L2350DW) is still available from Staples. We do a lot of printing business with Staples and receive their specials and coupons in the mail just about every month. Usually their sales are hard to beat especially since they're local and have a great return policy. However, the one exception is their ink cartridges and toner cartridges which tend to be overpriced when compared to on line vendors.

+1 for the Staples recommendation. That's pretty well the same for their products and sales at our local Canadian stores.

They were threatened with some very serious court actions from HP some years ago for selling generic "HP" inks and toner cartridges and given a cease and desist order which certainly sent some of their refill prices skyward.

That doesn't really matter since on line sales of HP inks and toner cartridges were always less expensive than the generic supplies sold by Staples. I've had good results from the refilled toner cartridges that I bought but have had some duds with ink cartridges for a Canon printer that I had. My current Epson is fussy about ink and always displays a warning when I use a generic refill. However, it's easy to override the warning from the menu panel.

Wow, that's completely opposite of the way things were up here a few years ago. But I have no idea of what there are lately as my HP inkjet died but my old Mac Serial ML4 Laserjet sits in a corner and is only used used very occasionally and only for large jobs and after I boot up my old iMac running 10.5.x and with AppleTalk!!!

HP printers generally have a bad Mac setup reputation up here so the selling price has to be really cheap to help compensate. I haven't had to deal with that.

I've been using generic ink cartridges with my Canon AIO MP and MX units with no problems at all. At least so far. Touch wood!!!

Brother lasers are terrific work horses. The toner and drums are a around $18 on Amazon

My experience is that the consumables that you can purchase on Amazon tend to be very low quality and they don't offer the reliability that one would hope for. I've been keeping track of third party sources for consumables from vendors that users have both found extremely reliable, of high quality, and which have excellent pricing, for a couple of decades now.

That's why I recommended Carrot Ink:
https://www.carrotink.com/tn850-black-toner-cartridge.html

Since Meritline went out of business, they are often the best all-around source for printer consumables.

Good choice. Be sure to check sales at Staples and also Amazon. Staples at one time had the Brother Laser Printer discounted $20.00 off the regular price. Don't know if the sale is still on, but you can check their on line store.
