Hey there I have an old Iomega 2 gig Jaz disk that connected via some sort of scsi connection.

Is there any jaz drives out there that can connect either via USB or FireWire?

You can look for a local Mac/Apple User Group, or maybe even a local computer place may have an old working PC with an SCSI port, and a USB port?

Edit: I couldn't tell if the OP had a drive, or just the disk? I assumed they just needed access to an SCSI port?

Throw it away. They were very unreliable even way back when they were popular. Those and the Iomega zip drives both the USB and SCSI models had a bad habit of failing often.

Large USB flash drives are dirt cheap nowadays.

I'm thinking that the OP has data on those old drives they want to access and transfer elsewhere as opposed to use old archaic storage technologies as today's backup method, just my guess. :)

In my opinion...your best option is to transfer all data you have stored on the Jaz disks onto an alternative form of storage. This could be a hard drive, SSD drive, USB flash drives.

Even storage methods that might be considered "old" storage technology now (CD-ROM's or DVD's) would be wayyy better than Jaz disks.:)

Yes, that is exactly it. I used it in college and had some old AVID and other program session files on there that i wanted to get. Not looking to use it, unless i have an actual drive. I only have the disk.

I guess the OP's question has sort of been answered, but I'm wondering what exactly they are wanting to do.

Just grab the data maybe??? If so, maybe there's a MUG close by with a member with the old equipment that cold do so.

I think I still have a working Iomega Jaszz drive and compatible Mac in the basement but it's been a quite while (several years) since they were used. I'm sure there are others like me maybe close by to them.

I'm located in Toronto.

All i want to do is copy the contents of my Jaz disk onto another portable hard drive, for me to keep / use as needed. Currently without the actual Jaz drive, i can't access it.

Check on eBay. You might be able to find a USB Jaz drive that someone is trying to sell. I believe Iomega made both the SCSI and USB versions same as they did with the Zip Drive.

You beat me to the same conclusion Dennis. I came to the same conclusion after a quick search the other night. Didn't post in hopes that someone else's Google mastery was better than mine.

Your search was right. every single one on ebay was SCSI and then I ran into that adapter.

Given the cost of what is undoubtedly older gear that may / may not be reliable depending upon how important the data is it may not be worth the effort. Onlt the OP can make that decision.

Until I started the search I was almost 100% sure there had been a USB version of the Jaz drive. I must have been thinking of the Zip 250 cartridges.

Same here. I put in Iomega Jaz drive USB and all the results that were usb were the Zip 250 and another Zip.

Same here. I may have a Jaz drive laying around somewhere but that was a couple of moves ago. In other wirds, I have no idea where that pile of junk might be. lol.

I figured that was your intention, but didn't know you had just the drive. Quick searches on eBay reveal that the drive and adapter are quite expensive (if in working order). Perhaps you can ask around and see if anyone you know still happens to have these drives around.

I would try contacting the older computer stores around the Toronto area and see if anyone has an Iomega Zazz drive still available and working.

But as Charles stated, the drives and the disks "were very unreliable". Big underststement!!!

If you get really desperate, you could contact me privately off-line if you wanted to send me your disk and a USB drive for any data transfer and pay any shipping charges. But I'd have to double check that my Iomega Jazz SCSI drive is still working along with my old DT Mac.

BTW: What's available these days that could use the "old AVID and other program session files"???

No sense recovering the data if it can't be used. And is it really worth all the trouble or just one of those "it would be nice" things??

Good advice from Patrick - think about it. Anyway, since you're both in Canada (opposite sides of the country), take him up on his offer to copy the data off your disk on to a flash drive and mail it back to you.
