Hi

I'm looking to replace my Apple Gen 1 Time Capsule and LaCie NAS. The TC is 1gb and full. The LeCie has died. Looking for recommendations. I looked at the WD My Cloud. It seems to meet my needs, BUT it seemes like it needs internest access to work. From what I've read, even if I'm on the same network as the WD NAS, if I loose my internet connection, I loose acces to my NAS.

I'd like to find something with the following features in order of importance to me.

1 Apple Time Machine
2 Network disk shows up on desktop
3 Can store and access iPhoto library
4 Can Store and play iTunes Library
5 Remote access via WAN to NAS, aka my own dropbox
6 Can Store and play video Library

Time machine and network disk are very important. My iPhoto and iTunes library have become very big on my Mac. I'd love to move them to a NAS and only access what I need. I'm thinkg of a unit with about 6-8tb.

Thanks!

I am not sure where you got the impression the WD My Cloud needs to be on the internet. I have a 4TB and it does not need access and is always available even if the internet is down. If I wanted to access files remotely from it I can set that up but I never have and it works fine. Truthfully I use it as extra back up for several work computers. The software and interface can be a bit touchy and all updates are manual.

I use my Synology NAS for what you have listed in your requirements. Just to give you an idea:

The units listed in the link above do not contain drives - they are extra. The total cost for my 20TB (RAID setup to be 16TB) unit was a bit less than $1000 US. But it has been totally reliable, easy to access and it takes care of any necessary firmware or software updates - notifying me by email when it does.

I choked at the initial cost but I have discovered you get what you pay for and it has been a fabulous edition. The cost will be based on how many drive bays and what hard drive capacity you decide on.

+1 for what Lisa said about WD My Cloud. I have two and neither are set for access from Internet, just in my LAN. I use them as a NAS and as a backup drive.

I think some people can't see the distinction between the internet, and their home network.
