I have a Western Digital external hard drive connected via USB directly to my Time Capsule which is set up to perform the Time Machine backups. Since the drive is directly connected is it automatically included in backups?

I wouldn't think so? I would assume, the TC, uses that port, like a network interface. If you want the drive backed up, you would have to do that manually, or connect it to your Mac, then include it in the TM Preferences.

When I go into the options area of TM preferences and click on the +, I can navigate to the external hard drive and the Exclude button turns blue. So doesn't that mean it is included as long as it connected via Finder, i.e. the hard drive icon is present on my desktop?

Do you mean it looks like this:

You will note that the top HD is in blue because I highlighted it. That means its is EXCLUDED, along with all the others in that window.

No, I'm talking about after I click on the + (as if to add something the exclusion list). When I navigate to the connected hard drive, the Exclude button turns blue. Here is a screen shot of that and also what is in my excluded items right now.

Ah right. Cross purposes probably. My apologies.

According to your "Excluded Items", the HD is not there; but as Bob pointed out in post #2, it may not be possible to BU that drive given the way TC is set up.

Thanks Bob and Ian! I went to Enter Time Machine via the menu bar icon and the time capsule is grayed out in the Finder window so it probably is not included in the backup since I'm not able to navigate to it. Appreciate the help!!
