I believe my 1T Samsung SSD has given up the ghost and 16,000 photographs.

When I examine the drive in disk utility it say all is good:

Repairing file system.
Volume was successfully unmounted.
Performing fsck_hfs -fy -x /dev/rdisk2s1
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking extents overflow file.
Checking catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking catalog hierarchy.
Checking extended attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
The volume Samsung_T1 appears to be OK.
File system check exit code is 0.
Restoring the original state found as mounted.
Operation successful.

When I click on the drive in Finder the SSD does not display any contents; when I hit CMD I it displays the following:

Capacity 1TB
Available 968.21 GB
Used: 33.57 GB

And in Disk Utility: 968.21 GB (1.58 GB purgeable); Used: 33.57 GB

I can't see the photos that are the 33.57GB; and most stupidly I only had one external backup.

Help!!

Could they have become hidden? This link

http://osxdaily.com/2009/02/25/show-hidden-files-in-os-x/

will show you how to make them visible. Type the commands very carefully, terminal is pretty powerful if you don't know what you are doing.

You didn't say what version of macOS, but the commands work all the way to High Sierra.

Crucial question: just in case of the worst, do you have a backup of your Hard Drive?

Time Machine and or a cloned backup?

What I can't understand is that all of the scans I do on the SSD shows 33GB in use.I can't figure out how to get to the contents of the 33GB.

The chart was made by my Mac when I asked for drive information.

When I look at the SSD in Disk Utility the same appeared as to the size and used.

I am at a loss to figure out how to see those files. I am not willing to pay $500-1000 for recovery. Today, because of a medical condition, I only use my images for sharing on Facebook.

Have you tried the things in the link I posted? If the files are "hidden" you won't see them in Finder, but they will show as taking up space, which is exactly what you are showing.

I wonder if some of those files he can't "see" are Local Snapshots made by Time Machine on his SSD? We have to remember that Time Machine will make local snapshots on the SSD whether or not it's attached.

YES! And thanks.

NO JOY!

I have given up; I am not willing to pay for data recovery. And, all of the different trials did not work.

Both drives - 1T SSD and 2T hard drive have been erased and formatted. First Aid says all good;

I am afraid to use them.

I have ordered2 2T WD drives to start clean with a new Time Machine backup and then my 2nd-redundant backup.

Thanks again.

You don't. The thread remains so that anyone later on can see it. That way, if someone has the same or similar problem, they can see what had been suggested.

I think you gave up too soon. But that's your call. If the drives are reformatted and reported as all good by First Aid, they are probably good to use. The fact that there were "missing" files on them that you didn't find doesn't mean that the drives are bad, just that whatever wrote those files didn't update the directory, or set the hidden flag. And those brand new drives could also end up with the same problem if the same "whatever" writes to them, too. If/when that happens, come on back and we can try some other stuff that we didn't get to this time.

+1. Agreeed.

But one could still run something like Data Rescue.app which can run in a demo mode.

But I guess the data wasn't really that important to bother with.

Thank you very much; really appreciated!!

BTW: Have you tried shutting down everything and then boot up with only the goofy drive and required stuff connected and powered On???
