burn DVD to play in a DVD player

I have a superdrive Emac running OS X 10.2.8 and I want to burn movies onto DVDs so that they will play in my DVD player that's connected to my TV. I've tried doing it through IDVD, like Apple suggests, but it won't reconigize any of my movie formats. They're either DivXs .avi or .mpg. I tried doing it through IMovie but that was a failure too. I just managed to completely burn one using Toast 5.1, but although I burnt it as a DVD, it just shows up as data.
I'm using Memorex DVD-Rs, so I don't think the actual DVDs are a problem.

Any suggestions? It would be great if somebody knew a program where I could just drag the file into the program and it would burn it w/o me having to convert .avi to this then that, etc .....

But at this point, I'm desperate. My parents are expecting me to bring home all 50 of the blank DVD's they bought me next week- chock full of movies they haven't seen yet :flower:

if you update to mac os 10.3, and toast 6, its super easier, but, you cantr burn the divx .avi files as is, they need to be converted to .mov files using divx doctor, you should be able to burn .mov files as a dvd, the mpg files you should be able to just burn, make sure youre using the video section and not the data section when burning dvds.

more problem

okay, i downloaded Toast 6.0.7 which lets you burn DVDs.
It burned all night and this morning when I woke up, I had an error message that said:
The drive reported an error:
Sense key = illegal request
sense code = 0x21,0x02
buffer underrun

somebody suggested that i'm burning the dvd too fast, yet it didnt give me the option to burn at another speed. it was set to 'best speed'.

...yet another blank dvd down the drain. any more suggestions?
thanks for responding to the other one, macman.

you need to have buffer underrun prevention checked in the toast prefs, were you running other apps at the same time as burning? if not a slower speed is probably a good idea.

This is old stuff..I'm sure. But...I have a TV-Max using EyeTV. The user manual says EyeTV 2. What is the relationship of the export types listed on pages 54 and 55 to the DVD world outside of Mac world.
I am not saying this very well.
How do I get from a recorded file in the Mac to a file my DVD player will read. It reads DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, Video-CD, Audio-CD, DVD-RAM, and DVD-R. How do I relate such files as MPEG Program Stream, MPEG Elementary Stream, DV, MPEG-4, DivX AVI, etc to the DVD names? And how can I tell what my EyeTV files are? I'm new at this.........as you can see.
Any and all suggestions and info will be much appreciated.
