All screenshots on my Sierra installation go to the Desktop and do not go to any particular app. There is a way of re-directing it to a different location, but again not into a particular app. Also, hitting SHIFT+CMD+4 should give you a cross-hair icon to allow you to select a region of the desktop, hitting SPACE after the SHIFT+CMD+4 gives you the ability to capture the entire desktop.

Are you sure you aren't using another screenshot app that is using the same shortcut as the one built into macOS?

Hi Ron - on one of your CMD-SHIFT-4 'screen captures', right-click and open the 'Info' dialog box - see pic below - check the default setting on the 'Open with:' option - if changed, then 'Change All..' can be selected, which means that all of your *.png images will be opened w/ the app selected. If this is not the issue, then you might need to look at the preferences in your Photo app, which I don't use much at all, so typically have nothing that automatically saves there. Dave :)

ADDENDUM: Ashwin is correct, i.e. all of my 'screen captures' go to the 'Desktop' - so saving & opening these PNG files is a different matter, so not sure that my suggestion is going to help, but still take a look.

No other apps, only one build into MacOS

See, it says (where ) save to dropbox, should nt it say iCloud Drive??

Hi Ron - your attachment is not working correctly (see the quote above)? Please provide more information on your 'cloud' settings, for iCloud and Dropbox - for the latter, I just opened the app and went to Preferences -> Import; check to see if 'Share screenshots using Dropbox' is checked - if so, uncheck and see what your screenshots do - you might want to also turn OFF your other cloud services to see the results? Dave :)

Open Dropbox (see attachment - should be a 'box' icon in your top menu bar, as in my pic) - then click on the 'Gear icon' to the far right which opens a dropdown menu - select 'Preferences' which will bring up the image in my previous post - follow the directions there. Also, you can disable your cloud services to determine if that makes a difference? Dave :)

GREAT Ron! Just curious for others reading your thread w/ a similar issue - did you 'uncheck' the Dropbox item about screenshots and/or disable your cloud services? Also, are your screenshots now being saved to the Desktop? Thanks for any comments - Dave :)

Since there's a solution posted, can I piggy-back on this thread and ask if there's a way to change the default .png save to a .jpeg instead?

Hello M_Six - if you need to change just a few .PNG screen captures to .JPG, then the images can be brought into Preview and saved in a different format. For a universal change, you can go into the 'terminal' - I was not sure about the exact command, but take a look HERE - both format & locations changes are discussed. Let us know if this helps.

Now for those wondering about the two image formats (and several others), see the chart from the web below - the .PNG allows lossless compression and also provides for transparency and translucency; for those interested, see this Wiki Article - Dave :)

Very cool. I'll check that out. Most times when grabbing a screenshot I'm not too concerned with compression. It's usually just to show someone what I'm seeing, so jpeg works fine. I usually end up using Photoshop to change from png to jpeg and resize, but starting with a jpeg would leave me with just resizing.

UPDATE: That worked perfectly. Thanks again for that link. Very handy.

For those reading this thread: The oft recommended maintenance utility Onyx can change the format of screenshots. Launch the program and go to Parameters>General.

Be sure to download the right version for your OS.
