Hello,
I recently had some old 8mm family tapes converted to DVD's. The company that did the conversion for me told me that it would be cheaper for me to make my own DVD copies because they charged $10 a disk. My problem is that I can not get the DVD's copied and working with the El Captain upgrade. I also have tried to move the files to I-Movie and can't get a copy to work on my DVD player. Any help would be appreciated. I even went to Apple chat and they really couldn't get it to work. My disk utility is limited. Is there a way to do this or do I have to go back to an earlier version or get some outside product like Wondershare?

Hello and welcome to the Forums.

A few years ago, I converted my VHS tabes to DVD using Roxio's product, since which time I have burned all my CDs and DVDs using Roxio's Toast Titanium software. Now, this is not a cheap product; but it does format conversions, handles audio, video, you name it.

As you owned these original tapes and the CDs you created from them, there is no legal or moral barrier to making copies for personal use or as a backup.

I have to state that I have absolutely no connection with Roxio, financial or otherwise. It is a personal recommendation.

There may be ways to achieve your aims within the OS - others would have to help there. My needs for reliability & robustness pushed me into 3rd party software. Yours may be served within OS as I said, but I haven't explored this.

You should be able to make copies using Disk Utility, which should be in Applications>Utilities. Make a Disk Image of your DVD, and then you can use that to make the copies.

I've used Roxio's Toast for a long time. The full suite is a bit expensive though especially if you don't need to burn DVDs often. Other options include

Burn
Burn DVDs using OS X El Capitain

If you type the search word Toast into the Mac App Store several alternatives will be listed that are either free/cheaper than the full version of Toast. There are a few there that should do what you need.

I use "Burn" as suggested by Slydude. It's free open source and works to make copies of CDs and DVDs. I haven't had much success using Disk Utility for some reason, but "Burn" has always worked.
