THIS IS DEFINITELY WEIRD!!!
Now my printer is working. The mini was asleep. I woke it up & tried again to add the printer & chose the driver & I was able to print out a page. I don't know if it is fully functional or not.
WEIRD!
I think that the scanner is working.
As long as I can print. I don't use the scanner very often. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
The Canon software isn't very intuitive. I'll still shop for a new printer.

Great news, and let's hope it keeps working.

A similar thing happened to my wife's iMac when I setup our Canon several months ago, the new printer suddenly became available and worked and I didn't download any software.

Then some weeks later, Software Update for my own iMac said new Canon software was available. Be cautious if that happens to you as the old software worked better and was a bit of a PITA to get installed back.

As you say weird. But don't knock it if it works!! ;)

Sounds like a super solution to the problem. If I purchased a printer that I liked really well (good quality, easy setup, good fears, etc.). I would certainly be willing to pay more for the printer…if it meant lower consumable costs.

I don't know if you remember (or experienced) the HP fiasco from years ago. When HP electronically coded each replacement ink cartridge with a "Used By" date (similar to what's printed on the package). If a user tried to install & use one of these replacement ink jet cartridges past the "Use By" date…it wouldn't work.

Hi Nick - I use to buy HP laser printers - we had a HP 4P laser that we seemed to use for many years (back when we were on PCs) - not sure if I ever had a HP inkjet but vaguely remember that expiration issue (maybe the reason I switched to other brands?) - Dave :)

That printer shot reminds me of our old networked HP Laserjet 4ML AppleTalk Mac Serial printer that believe it or not we're still using occasionally with all our Macs (10.5.8 - 10.9 5) and iPads that's connected via dumb router, Airport Express and an Asantetalk adapter and driven by an old Mac running OS X 10.5.8, the last to have ApppleTalk.

It's well past it's third 5,000 sheet box of paper and it's replacement toner cartridge cost $54.00 several years ago. And that's the total "ink" cost so far!! Not bad I'd say and yes, the old HP drivers are still even included with a Mavericks install!! Haven't needed or wanted to go to anything later. ;)

I still prefer HP Laser printers over other brands. HP toner cartridges are easier to find from re-filler sellers and are less expensive than those of other brands. Also, HP toner cartridges are all in one: toner - fuser - drum. Brother which is a good brand uses a different method and keeps the toner - fuser separate from the drum which adds to the cost of the consumables. Color lasers are great until you need to replace the toner cartridges. ;D

If I recall, it wasn't that long ago that HP clamped down big time and went on a witch hunt on all the third party toner and ink cartridge refillers/resellers. Only a few escaped which included some Canadian companies basically hiding with their main offices "protected" in Quebec.

HP may have gone on a Haloween witch hunt but it didn't change the fact that you can still buy re-fillable toner and ink cartridges from a load of on line suppliers. At one time they attempted to restrict the ink cartridges to only genuine HP ones by inserting a chip in the cartridge. (Canon did the same.) It didn't take long for the refillers to duplicate the chip(s). I know, because I purchased a bunch of those type of cartridges and they work great just like the original.

I went to Best Buy yesterday & bought a Brother MFC-J885DW printer. Setup was easy. So far, so good. I hope that it provides me with many years of reliable service. I'll donate my old Canon printer to Goodwill & ask them to recycle it.

What ticks me off is that I spent $47 on Canon cartridges that I now have to throw in the trash.

Great - hope that you enjoy the new printer! :)

I've donated a number of printers still in working order to Good will, and usually include the cartridges - if the printer still works and functions well on an older computer and/or OS, Apple or Windows, then someone might still be able to use it? Dave

I had a similar problem when researching Yosemite compatibility for my Canon Scanner. Not listed on website so i emailed them and they assured me that (a) the scanner would work (b) gave me a link to the updated driver (not accessible from the website and (c) tole me that the website is "often wrong".

And there's also the fact that most manufacturers have differencies in some of their models depending where they are sold, i.e.: NA vs UK, and often slightly different software. So the country software source can also make a difference.

Yes…it is a shame to have spent the money on the cartridges. But no need to throw them out…just include them with the printer donation.:)
And of course get a donation receipt at Goodwill…then use the charitable donation as a deduction on your annual income taxes!:)

Got it working

Install printer and scanner software from http://www.canon-europe.com/support...=drivers&language=EN&os=OS X 10.10 (Yosemite)

Nothing shows up on Mac

Connect printer via USB cable and then add driver in printers and scanners. Printer shows up at this point.

print test page

Go to app store and check for updates. Canon printer update shows up. Install update.

Install scanner from printers and scanners (Canon Bonjour scanner)

Click on open scanner in printers and scanners and scan test page.

Since there were no El Capitan drivers for my Canon printer, I took it to Best Buy & donated it. Then I bought a Brother printer. I haven't had any problems with my printer on El Capitan.

So, I can end this discussion. Thank you for your help.

Short answer is yes. Especially for inkjet printers they are almost disposable items. In the home/personal printer world it's almost cheaper to buy a new one than replace the cartridges. And 6 years makes it almost obsolete. A 6 year old MacBook would be one year past it's expected lifespan, Apple have upgraded their operating system 5 times in that period, a 6 year old Mac would struggle to run El Capitan.

I hate to sound like a broken record here (because I've mentioned this before), but have you read this Apple article? Including Apple's recommended procedure?
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201465

The MX860 driver is listed as "recently updated."

I just clicked on the link that you provided & went to the Canon website. It detected that I have El Capitan installed & when I clicked on "drivers", it told me that no drivers are available.

I have previously stated that I no longer have my Canon printer. So, I wish to conclude this discussion. Thank you for your help.
