Every once in a while I will get a small pop-up window stating I need to update: iPhoto and Garage Band. These updates are from 2015 and 2012, respectively. I do not use either one of these and would like to disable these notifications. Any suggestions?

The error message I get when I click on the upgrade button is: This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled.

If you don't use them and besides it seems that something is messed up as to the owner, why not just delete and Trash them?? That is, if you have permission to do so…

You may need to use something like Find Any File.app to locate and delete all bits and pieces:
http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/

If the updates are showing up in your "Software update" list, normally you can option+click or is it command+click on the app and choose to ignore update of some such option.

There are other options as well such as those like these:

and/or take your pick from:

@Patrick:

Have you tried to remove iPhoto or GarageBand? I'm wondering if they can be completely removed? Maybe iPhoto since it's no longer being updated but I'm not so sure that GB can be removed? Personally, I'd like to remove both as they are not used nor will ever be used on my Mac. (I now use Photos.)

@Charlie

It seem(s)/(ed) to be possible according to these:
Delete GarageBand, iMovie, & iPhoto If Unused to Free Up Disk Space in OS X
http://osxdaily.com/2014/01/02/delete-garageband-imovie-iphoto-mac-os-x/

and others:

Unless Apple has put some monkey wrench into the users way lately which wouldn't surprise me, but there's probably a way around that if it's so.

May have to disable SIP etc, not exactly sure.

PS: Don't forget to delete the huge optional GarageBand files if they got installed. A BIG drive real estate waster for those that don't need of use them.

Thanks Patrick. I'm going to use AppCleaner as suggested to see what happens. The instructions given are for the 2014 version of OS X Mavericks and as you say, SIP might prevent them from working in Sierra.

Good news. AppCleaner (after I updated it) was able to remove iPhoto and GarageBand. I was a bit worried about iPhoto hoping that removing it didn't mess with my photo library in the new "Photos" app. It didn't.

Note though... you need to either SUDO or respond with your Admin password in order to remove iPhoto or GarageBand. I probably should also remove iMovie but I may find some use for that in the future.

Something interesting I noticed during the removal: Over 18,000 items were removed - mostly GarageBand related.

Good the read chscag, and glad it was successful.

And BTW: even more interesting in my own situation was removing all the unnecessary surplus languages (.lproj folders) from a Sierra 10.12.2 install resulted in over 10.5+GB drive space saving according to the before and after Get Info shots I took.

I found that quite an excessive amount, and it was NOT a cakewalk procedure!!!

Removing all the unnecessary languages does save quite a bit of room but for some reason removing them causes MS Office for the Mac to refuse to update and in some cases it will crash and need to be reinstalled. I know it's unusual but we're talking about Microsoft and their odd way of doing things. Mac Office is one of my most used apps. Now if Apple would restore all the old functionality back into Pages, I wouldn't need to use Office at all.

Interesting, thanks for this vital piece of information since Office [Excel] is also one of my most used, too.

I was just about to ask how to delete GB and iMovies with AppCleaner [I am forbidden to erase them because they have a padlock on them and I do not know how to 'unlock' it], however, now I will just leave them.

One other annoying issue I have had with this laptop is that frequently the application I am using will quickly fly/shoot off to the right side of the screen and reveal my blurred desktop background [Sierra mountains] and bottom right has greater than sign in a circle [to get my app back onscreen] and bottom left screen has a + and - [to add widgets]. If I move the curser quickly up to the upper right corner the same issue occurs.

Can I disable this or, make it less sensitive?

EDIT: Upon further testing, there is another [more annoying] issue very similar whereby the application shoots [even faster] off to the edge of the screen and if more than one app is open they will shoot off to opposite sides of the screen and just be visible on the edge of the screen.

Unfortunately, not able to duplicate that issue to figure out what sets it in motion but, it does happen frequently.

Also be aware if you're tempted to remove surplus languages as I mentioned above, DO NOT remove any from the MS Office suites or most Abobe app suites. They will continue to work but will not update if there is any update until they are deleted and reinstalled.

Some "cleaning " apps don't always mention that fact as Monolingual.app and its ReadMe manual does and also how to exempt them.

Just thought I'd mention the fact… :eek:

EDIT:
Oppps… sorry chscag, I just noticed that you had mentioned the same thing in your #8 post, but there is a solution — don't "clean" the MS Office or some Adobe apps. ;)

The "shooting off" you see are called Desktops, and you can have multiples of them. When it shoots to the right and you see the blurry mountains, that is where widgets can be installed for quick access to things. You end up there by using a multi-touch gesture on the trackpad, intentional or not. Here is Apple's page on that: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204895

You can control them through System Preferences/Trackpad
