At the time of the alledged breach, the forums were owned by Penton, a large corporation. We (the current owners) do not know if Penton responded or if they did anything at all.

Just found this today in my email

That breach, if it actually did occur was over two years ago and I'd doubt you had anything of value to harvest with only two other posts according to your specs.

I also received this email.
I had to do the email verification/password sending thing again, so I guess that passwords seem to have been reset, which is a good thing.

> I'd doubt you had anything of value
Dates of birth, Email addresses, IP addresses, Passwords, Usernames = nothing of value ?

The next step: Please switch to storing plain text passwords. See Plain Text Offenders - About

Please could you tell me how to delete my account, thanks

Only an administrator can remove your account from our data base. If you really wish this to occur, let me know in your reply and I will remove your account.

I just received notification of the same from Lifelock. Changed my password to this site. Not worried about it.

Thanks "Bald Eagle" and "macbeth" for your patience. Under the old site ownership there was a breach which occurred, however, at the time we were not notified of the extent of the breach. Changing your password should suffice.

You can always access your profile from within the forums and change your password, date of birth, and other information about yourself. Some folks have just blanked out their date of birth which is allowed. We don't care when you were born as we do not serve alcohol, or sell tobacco. ;D

I too just got this notification from LifeLock:

DARK WEB MONITORING ACTIVITY NOTIFICATION
We detected identity information which may belong to you on the Dark Web, a term used which may also include the deep web or a peer-to-peer file sharing network.
The information found is usually from a "list" that's being given away, traded or sold. The list could be old, so it's important to see whether or not the information is out of date.
If you recognize information below as belonging to you [and it did] change the password immediately with the affected website or service immediately.
We also recommend setting up 2-factor authentication if available with that website/service.
If you see a social security number belonging to you, review credit reports for suspicious activity, watch financial transactions, and make sure LifeLock alert preferences settings are up to date for the account that belongs to you.

The site MacForums has been reported to possibly have suffered a data exposure that could include usernames, emails, passwords and more information.
The possible exposure would have happened in November 2017, although it was reported in November 2018.

So my question is, why are we just hearing about this now?

they never told users about it. I never got any notices anyway. typically when this happens, companies try to be hush hush about it. in fact this is the first time I've learned of it. I put a fake DOB in my profile so they did not get my DOB. :)

So my question is, why are we just hearing about this now?

As stated above when this occurred the forums were owned by a large corporation who did not notify the membership. You have the ability to change your password and date of birth from your user profile. You can see from this thread that we do not care when you were born so if you wish, you can remove your DOB. No other information that we have concerning your profile leaves you open to fraud or identity theft.

Ive noticed the date of birth cant be changed? so if someone used their real DOB when they joined the forums, they can not change it?

also some parts of the forum don't work. under my account> general settings nothing loaded... get a syntax error...

Well I don't know about any other members, but I do know that I was not reborn. Maybe you were expecting someone else???

But I am suspecting that any hacker would have to break in or use some admin's password as per the note, assuming the option was set to hide the birthdate:
Your date of birth and age are displayed in several places on the forum. Only the administrator will have access to your date of birth should you choose to hide it via the privacy option below. Please contact the Administrator if your date of birth has changed.

But is a person's birthday date actually that vital or a critical part to any security breach???

But they do ask me to confirm my birthdate when I go to the lab to provide a blood sample for my INR level. So maybe it is a sort of cross-check??? I don't know.

You can only hide your date of birth, not change it. I thought at one time that profile item was editable by the user but apparently it was changed when the vBulletin software was updated. However, I will go into the master data base and remove your date of birth entirely. And... I will do the same for any other member who wishes it also. Just let me know.

I can't explain why your profile settings will not load. I just tried mine and they worked fine.

I put a fake DOB in mine so no big deal.

if I go to My account> edit profile> general settings, I get this.

syntax error, unexpected 'text' (T_STRING) on line 1 in /home/macforums/public_html/forums/profile.php(4826) : eval()'d code(67) : eval()'d code
#0 /home/macforums/public_html/forums/profile.php(4826): eval()
#1 /home/macforums/public_html/forums/dbseo.php(500): require('/home/macforums...')
#2 {main}

For your records, I get exactly the same thing which I believe I referred and implied to a few days ago as a reply post about the page not working properly.
