I just got a new 21.5" iMac. I would like to set up my music files on an external drive to save space (100MB) on the iMac HD. Currently all of the music files reside on a MacBook Pro that will be reformatted clean.

iTunes shows a specific path where the music files would be saved on the iMac, but again, I'm looking to do this on an external drive hooked up to the new machine.

Is there anything special that needs to be done other make a folder on the external drive and call it Music?

Thanks in advance.

You didn't mention which version of iTunes you have but in either case this article should get you going in the right direction. One thing is worth remembering: Once you complete this process of transferring your library to an external drive make sure that the drive is on and mounted when you launch iTunes. If you start iTunes without the external drive attached or turned off you will usually see one of the following behaviors:

1. iTunes can't find the track you want to plat and puts up a dialog box asking wither you want to locate the file.
2. iTunes will look in the previous location (usually your internal drive) and will default to that location for anything you do.
3. If you add music to the library while the external drive is off the content gets added to the previous iTunes location.

Most of these issues can be resolved by doing the following:
1. Quit iTunes
2. Attach the external drive with your iTunes library and make sure the drive mounts.
3. Re-launch iTunes.
