Built-In Input has disappeared.

Hi, all. I'm brand-new to Macs, more or less, and I have an issue that's driving me nuts.

My computer is a Mac Mini Mid-2011 (5,3) running the Sierra OS. I'm a musician, and I bought a Mackie Onyx Producer 2x2 audio interface yesterday so I can record my guitar. The interface connects to the Mac via USB (does not use the Input jack on the Mini).

In the process of playing around with the settings and trying to stop the guitar from sounding distorted, I realized this morning that I no longer have Built-In Input as an option for anything. I can't get to it in Sound, or in Audio Midi, or in the top bar by pressing the Option key (where you would normally switch inputs and outputs, control the volume, etc)

Things I tried:

--Disconnected my guitar and the interface and rebooted

--NVRAM and SMC resets.

-- the "toothpick" trick (although headphone jack does not have a red light).

--Plugging my iPod headphones in and out of the Input jack several times.

The odd thing is: I DO still seem to have input sound--but it's Line In only. When I connected the earbuds and spoke directly into them, it registered...and when I plugged my guitar back in, that registered as well.

If I Google this problem, I can find quite a lot about it in terms of OUTPUT not showing up...but nothing about INPUT.

I have two theories:

--Maybe Built In Input still works, but the Source is stuck on Line In for some reason

--Maybe I somehow accidentally damaged the sound card, and the Mac won't let me switch to Built-In because it got overloaded...and therefore, Line In is the only source left. That doesn't really seem likely, though, since I'm working with a DI and I've been very careful to keep the gain low)...

'm very confused. The Mac will let me select the Mackie if I connect that (via USB), and the default Output is still there...but for the input, it *will not* go back to Built-In, even if nothing is connected and even with the resets I've done.

So...anyone have any idea what might have happened, and how can I fix it?

(I apologize in advance if I haven't provided enough tech information. I'm used PCs for many years, but I'm a Mac newbie and aren't very knowledgeable about them)

Grateful for any and all assistance

-Joseph

I'd start by disconnecting all devices you don't need, then shutdown, wait at least 30 - 40 seconds, then Boot up.

Press and hold the option key and select the Apple icon at the top left and select "System Information", then select USB in the left column and see what it shows. Close the window.

Now connect your new device and repeat procedure and see if the devices shown.

You've already done the other diagnostics that would normally have been suggested, but it seems to be a bit of an odd situation.

The above procedure may not fix the problem, but it should at least show if the device is being recognized or not when connected.

Hi Patrick--thank you, but I think maybe I'm misunderstanding your reply. It is indeed very strange!

In Sound options, Built-In Input doesn't appear--only Line input does. I haven't had a device connected for hours now.

I did notice this, in System Information:

Built-In Input:

Default Input Device: Yes
Input Channels: 2
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Current SampleRate: 48000
Transport: Built-in

Built-in Output:

Default Output Device: Yes
Default System Output Device: Yes
Manufacturer: Apple Inc.
Output Channels: 2
Current SampleRate: 48000
Transport: Built-in

I would expect to see "Default System Input Device" as well...and yet, I don't.

I'll try thinking more about this tomorrow and maybe someone more familiar with Mac minis could help out with some info as I'm not sure how they even work with sound inputs.

But I would have expected to see your new device show up, even if it has some odd name for the sound input device.

Is USB the only way for that device to connect???

Again, I think there's some confusion here. I don't think I am explaining this well, and I apologize! This is not a problem with the USB device (which works fine). The Mac itself, with nothing connected to it, now has Built-In Input greyed out, with only Line-In as an option, whether or not a device is connected

(and my internal mic is gone)

Well, I must admit that I am now quite confused.

According to the specs I read, if I've actually got the correct model, that Macmini5,3 Model doesn't even have an internal microphone!!
See specs and ports here: https://everymac.com/systems/apple/...e-i7-2.0-mid-2011-server-specs.html#macspecs2

Microphone: None Sound In: 1
Details: Combined "audio line in minijack (digital/analog)."
Sound Out: 1 Headphone: 1
Details: Single combined "audio line out/headphone minijack (digital/analog)."

But regardless, the Mackie Onyx Producer 2x2 audio interface device, connected via USB, should certainly show as an input device, but maybe with a different name.

I guess it's possible that the device itself doesn't actually work and maybe broken. Do you have any other sort of device that you could use to check and test??? Like a compatible USB microphone or something???

I'm sorry I'm not that much help. We need a Technical musical mac-forums member with some Connection/Setup knowledge to help out here.

I seems to be prevented from adding an edit comment above, so I'll try again here:

EDIT:
Maybe I'm misunderstanding how the device works, but I'm wondering if the USB connection is not just for Powering the unit, especially when I look at the specs, and maybe their software uses a different configuration???
I used the specs here: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/OnyxProducer22--mackie-onyx-producer-2-2-usb-audio-interface

But I really just don't know.

Over and out...

PS: For the Admins, this is what I kept getting when trying to add an edit comment in case you're interested, and it just popped up in a new Chrome window when trying to post:

Just more odd behaviour I guess...

@Patrick:

I'm getting the same thing when trying to edit your post. I have no idea what the heck a "Sucuri Website Firewall" is?

Could that be something related to your ISP maybe?

I don't think so but who knows. I've never come across anything even similar ever!! Strange one.

Maybe it's something to do with the owners of this site and something they implemented. I really don't know and it's waaay over my head. As is the info at this page here:
