I have tried downloading LP's onto Mac without success. Have tried QuickTime 7 Pro, Garageband and connected to
mic port from my receiver to which the phono is connected. Any suggestions?

What kind of turntable do you have? A USB turntable makes recording from LPs very easy as long as your Mac has a working USB port.

Are you saying, you got the music onto your Mac?

If your receiver is older it may not work properly. Or, if your Mac is newer, it may not work properly. Give us the details of all the devices you are using;

to play the LP?
Mac model and year?

And anything else you think is interfering with your goal?

And the Griffin iMic adapter works very well for turntables with just phono jacks:
https://griffintechnology.com/us/imic

It used to come with the phono Y cable and used the Final Vinyl.app, but their site now recommends using the Audacity.app. I don't know if it still works with the latest macOS versions.
https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/9439/final-vinyl

But I'm not clear or understanding if the OP has got the files saved or not, or whether they can play the files or what the actual situation/problem is.

I have a Pioneer Direct Drive turntable connected to my Onkyo (new) receiver that
I take the signal out the zone 2 out to my Mac 10.8.5 and plug into the external
audio input with a 1/8" stereo plug. I have tried using Garageband, Audacity and
QuickTime to download signal with no success. I have gone into Preferences and
set my inputs to line in and set my Garageband at No Effects using microphone.
Any suggestions?

Why not try using the receivers headphone output connection???

Also, what is your Mac's System Prefs > Sound pref >Input and output set to? And does the Onkyo receiver or soothing even showup there??
But I guess they are from your description but maybe check the settings again.

Which exact Mac model are you using? If it is a Mac which has one of those combined headphone and Mic jack a standard 1/8" stereo connector probably wont work. A four pole connector such as this one might work. I actually prefer this to avoid having to find a four pole connector. Their not hard to find but I never seem to have one when I need it.

I'd probably try something other than GarageBand for this as well. It's a good program but for general recording in this kind of situation it can be a bit tricky to get the settings set up correctly. I haven't used this program personally but it seems simple to set up and use. The demo is free to try.

I was in a similar situation as you are some time ago and I had to essentially trick things into working. I think I did the following
1. Make sure the turntable is connected properly and you are getting good wound without the annoying hum that is sometimes present.
2. On some stereos you need to activate the tape output /monitoring function on the stereo to hear sound from the turntable. If that is the case run the audio cable from that tape output loop to the Mac.
3. If you go into System preferences and look at the audio inout you should see an indication that sound is being picked up.

I want to thank all of you who provided information to help me in my time of need.
I'm almost embarrassed to say, that when all else fails, do some basic checking
of all the pieces of the puzzle. My problem was a defective analog cable. I did
the troubleshooting up to the cable, took it off the system, put another in its
place and guess what? I had a good, clear signal. Again, thank all of you for
your time and expertise.

Good to hear and thanks for the feedback and good sleuthing BTW. ;)

I wonder if and when I'll actually get around to getting some of my own vinyl stuff converted. I even bought a new USB turntable some time ago to use for a lot less money than just a replacement Shure cartridge was going to cost for my very old turntable.

But right now it's all just another "'Round-Tuit" project!!! :Smirk:

I either gave away or converted all my vinyl stuff years ago. The problem with old vinyl is noise, pops, scratches, etc. Yes, I know there are filters that can remove most of that but it usually results in a recording with limited response and bandwidth. I do have a number of cassette tapes that I need to convert though. Although, I can still play them in my auto audio system. Yeah, my Mustang is so old that it came with a cassette player in addition to a CD player/AM-FM Stereo. LOL.

Fortunately, most of my LP's have been in a sleeve and I always was very particular in how
I handled them, so most of them are in very good condition and don't have the scratches
and dirt that cause some pops or hiss.

Glad you got things sorted out. Consider yourself lucky for avoiding the noise in your Lps. I've usually had all kinds of problems.

I only have a few LPs left. Most of them are not worth transferring. I bought a turntable some time ago to transfer my copy of "Return of the Griffin". Never quite got around to setting the thing up and before I tackled the project that album was re-released on CD.

Hope you'll be able to get to the other LP's. My LP's go back to 1958 when Billy Vaughn
released a Stereophonic album titled Orange Blossom Special. I have nearly all the
LP's released by the Statler Brothers. Most of the LP's I have, have not been released
in CD format, thus my endeavor to convert. Thanks for all your comments.

I have a pro-ject turntable and probably about 4 or 500 albums... and probably even more cassettes, I love listening to them all, I keep thinking I’ll someday convert but it seems easier to slowly repurchase some of the more immmediate stuff digitally :)

I have a fascination with the vinyls that I started with in 1958 and most of which
have not been remastered, thus my desire to convert to digital so I can have them
in my vehicles or on my Sansa mp3 player.
