• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

If you can stand the quality loss you can store ****loads of footage on a CDR/RW in MP4 format (you'll prolly need QT-Pro to do so though).

It is a good solution if you are playing around with lots of small clips as well or even for authoring a rough cut to demo around to family or friends, I'm not sure how many PC players can handle MP4 files though they can always download the lates QT release I suppose.

The other advantage is that some of the newest DVD players can also handle MP4 (so I'm led to believe but I haven't actually witnessed it).

I have found a 500Gb Firewire HD storage system on the net, I'll try to find the link when I get home. ;)

Does anyone know what sort of degredation you get from converting DV to MP4 and back again?
